business decision

Fictitious event
A company named Acme Ceramics, which makes a small ceramic gauge now for the military, has decided to move its operation to a small island in the Philippines. It has been on route 101 New Hampshire for thirty years. On this island the average wage is $2.50. per day. Acme will be paying its labor force $5.00-/day for a ten hour day 5 days a week In addition any of their 62 employees who works an entre week receives an extra $3. bonus. In America they had 80 employees while in the Philippines they plan to hire 62. The extra hours and expected speed will allow them to have fewer employees. In the states they paid their employees between $10- to $14/per hour. Business has been down somewhat but they have just received a contract with the department of defense that should run for at leas three years.
Is this a win- wn for the employees of the Philippines and the company?

Well first I would ask what is the cost of living in the Philippines. I checked and learned that $25.00 per week would not pay for food, rent, nor utilities in the Philippines. But jobs are scarce there.

Then I would ask what the profit margin of this company would compare in both places.

And then I would ask why the Philippine government would subsidize poverty.

Perhaps if we all choose to live like Philippino's, this fictitious company would stay in America? Of what benefit to the American people it would bring I am clueless.

On thissmal Island as i said the average day pay is $2,50
the American people what do they get? not in the case but maybe they get rid of a potential polluter. and lower payingjobs 10 to 14 per hour hard to live on even in N.H.
why woul profit margin make a difference? there is a better oportunity for profits on this Island. don't have the paperwork all the laws they save on taxes.; An the tax they will be paying on the iosland will bring in electricity, roads.
And then I would ask why the Philippine government would subsidize poverty. from 2.50 to 5 is a 100 per cent increas plus the opportunity for an dditional 3.

Well if the focus is only on the company, I agree it would be a great business move. Not so sure it would be a boon to the Philippines though.

Only an idiot government such as the one that we have in the USA ,would give defense contacts to companies that move their production out of the country .

Assuming 200 hours of employment a year the New Hampshire employees have been paying federal, state and local taxes on $20-28K annually. Just a drop in the bucket to the overall taxation used to meet the expenses we have paid for by government. But you take the no longer paid taxes of these 80 people and add them to the no longer paid taxes of the other 'lost my job to cheap off shore labor' people and we wind up with a big budget deficit.

But if it's good for the business.......... :p

Sorry, I missed a zero. Most people work 2000 hours a year in full time employment.

I figure average work week 35 hours times 50 weeks of work that is 1750 hours worked. again times $14/hour comes out to be $24500 this would be a ten percent IRA bracket maybe less if a familt of 4. This does leave out property tax and sales tax (in New Hampsire no saes tax no state income tax. you get whacked on property tax. I do not know if fica is taken out of overseas enployment however at 80 employees in N.H. its total payroll for the company $1,960,000 (someone check math.)
Considerablt less on Island of ___
