British comics.....

Who remembers the British comic books. This is a Beano circa 1940s
I remember Beano and Dandy...........I always got those. Then I remember Rupert the Bear. I don't know if he had his own comic or was just one comic inside another one?
Anyway lets see what we can remember.

People of a certain age who were raised in Britain will recall the comics Beano and Dandy. Most kids prized them for generations. The charactors were rather naughty I suppose and not at all politically correct.
There was a girls magazine presented in the early 1950s called Bunty and every girl just had to have that as well. Prior to that it was reading the boys comics or nothing. So I am sure Bunty was very well received at the time.

The charactors inside the comics Beano and Dandy became quite famouse I believe. Lets see what I can dredge up, my memory is not so good anymore.

Well who can forget Dennis the Menace and Roger the Dodger? who was the little girl ?

When we went home for a holiday, we took the kids with us. The boys were quite young at the time and one of the neighbours a Mrs Bird (fondly known to all as "Birdie") gave them some of the comic Annuals. Well they came back to the States with some good old English phrases that were picked up by the local kids as well.....................so............. ..........anyway.

I fondly remembered Rupert from my own childhood. One story in particular stuck with me and I still somewhat remember the adventure of Rupert and the Mares Nest.
So it was with great glee that I now could share that wonderful comic with my own kids.

The Rupert Annuals were particularly good because they were done in a format that appealed to several age groups. The main part of the page was all pictures, but below was the story written out for older readers. Rather unique.

You are such a treasure Espirit, as you come up with some of the good old english stuff that is probably long forgotten. My brother who lives in England still has his collection of comic magazines, mainly Beano and Dandy, but he told me they are getting a little ragged around the edges. They must be from the 1940's. I told him that they are probably worth a few pounds nowadays, so he should try to sell them as his kids don't want them. Speaking of Rupert, I still have a Rupert book that I bought in England for my daughter when she was about five or six years old. Can't remember the title of the book offhand. I also have a little gollywog doll that my mom's friend made her when she was born in 1964 and also her teddy bear from England that she got when she was little. I'm glad I kept them at my house as she has moved so many times during the growing up and married, unmarried years, I'm sure they would be gone by now. I've also got a collection of Enid Blyton books, but I bought those a few years back for my grand-daughter, but she's grown now and is not interested in them. Perhaps I should try to sell them.
Hope everyone has a great week

Well Jimsgarbo you can blame Taffy for the inspiration. We were talking about chocolate and the subject came up. I thought it would make a great post.
Yes those comics are worth a bit now if in good shape. Look them up on Amazon.com.
My kids kept a few but those were not really old ones. The ones that are valuable now are the early ones as most were destroyed during the war. They recycled paper back then. Some of us used them for toilet paper after the war haha.

I remember when we went back to England when i was 12, the boys had to be 7 and 8...getting their hands on those comics from Mrs Bird...from then on we used the phrase...EEEEEEEEEE BEEEEEMMM GLLEEEEEEMMM whenever we would get one over on the other....which we had picked up from one of the comics...dont remember the character who did that or what comic it was in....
I remember getting in to trouble with mum and getting a yelling at...Jason (middle sibling) stood behind the door peaking around and was whispering... EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEM at me....i was livid and could do nothing about it as i stood there and mum had her back to him...as soon as i got away from mum i was on him beating him into a pulp! LOL
We took great pleasure in saying that to each other whenever we could...if i got a bigger piece of candy than the others...it was a wicked grin and a EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeee....if one of the boys managed to pinch or otherwise cause bodily harm on me or the other brother it was an EEEEEEEEE as he was running for his life! etc etc...we are now adults and stil on occasion use that phrase on each other.

Lucky lucky us!
Every Friday my father used to come home from work with a big pile of comics and loads of sweets for my brother, sister and me.
Amongst the comics were:
Beano, Dandy, Topper, Beezer, Eagle, Girl, Jack and Jill, Robin, Girl's Crystal and Schoolfriend, I know I have missed some out. Later came Bunty for my sister and teenage magazines with pop star posters for me.
You can imagine how we were the envy of our friends.

I also remember that when I was very small my comics were Rainbow (with the Bruin Boys) and Chick's Own.

The Beezer merged with another comic
