..................talkin' 'bout roses. I'm a really lucky guy to have two such beautiful roses in sisterfriendships with my sisters Cali and Sherri. Two really sweet girls that are both so smart and creative with writing............

A Rose
by Elizabeth
A lovely rose with petals soft
A scent so sweet and light
So beautiful a flower
With colors shining bright.
But something not so savory
About the fragrant rose -
The thorns, so sharp upon the stem,
That sharpen as it grows.
Yet still lovely is the flower
Despite the thorns that prick
Just as life and love are sweet
They too have thorns that stick.
But do not fear to live or love,
Life's not exempt from pain -
So pick a rose, you may get hurt,
But you will also gain!

I have beautiful roses in my little garden and they are all in big flower pots. They practically bloom all year round because the weather agrees with them and I love to go and sit in my garden and just enjoy smelling them and looking at their beauty. I have one called Castillian rose and the smell reaches me when I sit there reading. It's just something I can't explain but this one fills the air with her perfume. The more buds there are the more one can enjoy the smell from it. Then I have a peach colored variety and some variegated ones so my little garden is a pleasure to sit there and enjoy the different colors that surround me.

I remember when we were kids in grammer school the boys would shout at the girls(because they didn't have the nerve to approach them)and the girls would answer:

Roses are red
Violets are blue
People like you
Should be in the Zoo

I love yellow roses but they don't grow well in the tropics unless you have a greenhouse. I always think that a rose is like many people - sweet, attractive, but dangerous if you get too close.

Roses red and roses pink
Roses cause the heart to think

Roses pale and roses dark
Roses have caused love to spark

Rose sweet and roses spicy
Roses can thaw a life that's icy

Roses large and roses small
Roses will always enthrall

Roses in bud and roses full blown
Roses a form of love oft shown

Roses are red, violets are blue
Daisies are my true love’s tatoo
Surgeons knife removed a blemish
Tattoo artist did embellish
With a flower fragile and so fine
Upon her breast and on her behind
Upon her arms with daisy vine
You can have your roses with your wine
I’ll take daisies, on that sweet gal o’ mine.

Roses are so beautiful from a distsance, but I can't stand the smell! The sweetest ones I ever saw were at a wedding last summer - all pastel colors: lavender, peach, pale pink, pale green. They were so pretty. At the Nixon's gravesite in California, there are roses from the White House rose garden. I guess I was impressed with that, as I never saw the White House rose garden. My bathroom is decorated with roses.

Roses. What can I say? When I married my husband I inherited the ‘duty’ of tending to his mother’s rose garden. The garden was just outside her front door and could be seen from the large picture window near the door. Mama’s chair sat in such a way that she had a view of the television, front door and her precious rose garden.

I knew nothing about roses and the garden had been neglected for a few years. I set about learning as much as possible about roses. Prunning, feeding, when to cut them back, bare root, watering etc. I began by weeding the entire garden, about 15 feet by 25 feet. Is that a big garden? I don’t know. My goodness, those weeds were terrible. I weeded for days after work and on the weekend. I finally got it all cleared and then made an irrigation ditch around each rose and a trough for the water to flow through. It was quite wonderful I thought.

As to the roses in the garden, all I knew at the time was that there were a Mr. Lincoln rose, an All American Rose and a yellow rose that “Mama” highly prized. I had a blank spot so I bought a White Rose and planted it there. How I tended that garden, pruning, watering, feeding, picking the roses for Mama and placing them near her chair and on the dining room table.

One day, Mama, decided that she loved wild birds. She chose to feed them on the walkway right outside to door. Can you see where this is going? Think about it. Bird seed right next to a garden that gets watered regularly. Yeah, that’s right. The darn seeds would blow, get dropped or just end up in the garden. Soon I not only had a Rose Garden, I had a weed garden as well.

I kept up the garden even after her death and eventually grew to love them as much as Mama. My favorite rose is a yellow rose. My Grandfather was from Texas and that was his favorite as well as my Grandmother’s and mother’s. I just like the way a yellow rose looks. It is just cheerful.
