A New Career

If you were to start a new career in your late 50's or in your 60's what would you do?

I am in my mid-60's, if I where to start a new career it would be in the casino industry. The customer service end that worked on developing loyal repeat customers. I think it is a fascinating industry and would serve me well as my 4th career in life.

My hobby has always been "electronics". Messing around with tvs, stereos and for the last 15 years, computers. Wish I could work in computers, but about 8 years ago I put in some applications, and like so many other things nowadays, you've got to have a degree.

Red, you might be able to take some course at a junior college and they are not as expensive as a 4 year college...and matchstich, I am sorry to hear about your cancer...are you getting any better?

I am disappointed that the stimulus package did not have more money? or any money for job training in it. I had thought about nursing but forget it...too stressful. I left social work because of the stress.. I wanted something part time...do they have data input anymore?

Redhand, you might also want to check again especially with HR at any Higher Ed institution near you. In the last 5-6 years many Colleges and Universities have moved toward what's called KSA's (Knowledge, skills and abilities) rather than degrees. A course or two might be helpful to get the official jargon...but if you talk about what you can do in a way that shows hands on knowledge...you might have a better chance now than a few years back. The University i work for actually was ushered into the KSA approach by the IT dept. The way they put it was some of these folks who've never had any formal training can actually accomplish more than some of the ones with degrees.

You also might want to consider setting up your own 'shop', hiring yourself out to do repairs. Little more complex tax wise, but i know there are agencies around that should be able to help you.

I would like to find the time to write books, but right now I'm busy enough being a social worker at a crisis center. Someday...

I'd like to start as a midwife. I have always been interested in that. It's not gonna happen cause I'm disabled but its a nice dream.

I would be totally involved in clean energy. Having lived with solar and wind generators for over a decade, I have much respect for both. I enjoyed setting up the systems and marveled when they began to work. A career in clean energy would be a plus for me, solar/wind generators are just starting to catch on. Also, I'm very interested in learning more about the geothermic energy which runs my electricity here in Negros.

Matchsitch, good to hear you're able to use your arm!

I spent my social work career working in community service organizations. You are right Pamela, way to much stress. The problem of being retrained is having to take all those yucky classes again because they were taken so long ago! I would study cultural anthropology and teach.
