Well I thought at one time Phantasm was scary, but a second shot at it years later I reevaluated it to silly. Reanimator comes to mind, but I only viewed it once. 28 Days later was pretty good.
I had someone tell me "Seven" was the scariest movie they'd ever seen, but to me that was suspense not horror.
I think it was scary cause it was believable.... most horror movies seem preposterous to me - that one seemed "do-able"

The Shining with Jack Nicholson is another classic I loved, it is scary with out the senseless graphic violence also War Of The Worlds was great as well. I also love romance and comedy but sometimes as long as I am not home alone I like a thriller.
