Duped again...

Are there things that you have just always believed? Well AAPR magazine will crush you in their current issue, with 5 of our favorite myths.

1.) Most of your body heat is lost through your head.
Nope; if you don't wear gloves it will feel like you are losing your body heat through your hands too.

2.) Taking vitamin C and zinc will help prevent or shorten a cold.
Nope; zinc can actually harm you and some of the zinc cold products have been taken off the market.

3.) You should drink at least eight cups of water per day.
Nope. The average person already gets 75 ounces of water per day from food alone.

4.) Illnesses come from cold or wet weather.
Nope. Bad weather encourages us to stay indoors where we can more easily share our germs.

5.) You're really using only 10 percent of your brain.
Nope....although it may seem that way for some of us. No area of the brain is completely unused.

There...feel better now?

Most I agree with. Except that people's needs for vitamin C varies with their lifestyle and whether or not they have an infection to fight. A smoker uses up vitamin C very quickly. During a raging infection the body can use up to 1,000 mg an hour before they reach an excessive amount. There are hospital studies that prove that. I personally have used vitamin C when I had pneumonia, at that rate, 1,000 mg per hour around the clock and it wasn't until the 3rd day that my body began throwing off the excess as the infection was clearing up. Don't believe the FDA, but nutritionists, especially those who have worked with vitamins and supplements and are not toadies of Big Pharma.

We may not lose body heat as rapidly through our hands and feet, but circulation there is poorest in the extremeties and they are subject to frostbite.

There are those who will dispute the water theory, though, saying that the liquid we get through foods has to be processed and is not the same as drinking water to rehydrate and flush toxins from our systems. I didn't buy the water theory, either. Until I started drinking water daily -- in addition to the coffee, teas, coke and other liquids. The difference showed up right away. In skin and elsewhere.

The water one was the one that I didn't think was true, or rather that I don't agree with.

The water theory is not even a theory, it is a wold guess by some unqualified staffer, I've read. NOT proven by any evidence. It is amazing how widespread was its acceptance.

wild, not "wold" guess.

As for heat lost thru the head, there is a reason Russians wear these huge fur hats, and it is not to look taller.

We had really cold weather twice the last 20 years, back in jan 94 we had the "Siberian Express" for a few days, cold air from Siberia thru Alaska and Canada and dumped on our heads. My 11yr old Pontiac decided to die right at that time, and I remember foolishly going to pick it up one morning at 7 AM with no hat of any kind on. Then I understood the Russian hat thing. I still very rarely wear anything on my head in the winter, and we only had a similarly cold weather for a week or so in jan 09.

I love wearing my Elmer Fudd hat for snow blowing and plowing; the rest of the time, not so much.

Yeah, next year --or next month--they will reverse all of this. I don't agree with the water drinking thing at all. On good days I probably use 50% of my brain but that's not saying much

"On good days I probably use 50% of my brain "

-Seriously, how can you tell how much % you are using?

--And on bad days?

...on bad days, brain waves are not a blip on the screen.
