Duped again...

Are there things that you have just always believed? Well AAPR magazine will crush you in their current issue, with 5 of our favorite myths.

1.) Most of your body heat is lost through your head.
Nope; if you don't wear gloves it will feel like you are losing your body heat through your hands too.

2.) Taking vitamin C and zinc will help prevent or shorten a cold.
Nope; zinc can actually harm you and some of the zinc cold products have been taken off the market.

3.) You should drink at least eight cups of water per day.
Nope. The average person already gets 75 ounces of water per day from food alone.

4.) Illnesses come from cold or wet weather.
Nope. Bad weather encourages us to stay indoors where we can more easily share our germs.

5.) You're really using only 10 percent of your brain.
Nope....although it may seem that way for some of us. No area of the brain is completely unused.

There...feel better now?

I feel terrific thanx Michi. ya know that our feet sweats about 600 ml (2 + a bit cups) of water out everyday? and our feet lose as much heat as our heads and more than our hands? (got cold feet? put on a hat). Our body can only use about 30 - 50 mg of vitamin C per day. Excess is just passed out through our urine. I sometimes wish I had access to the 10% we have of our brains. There are times I'm sure I'm hovering down there in the 1% or so mark.

I think #1 is the only one most people believe, the others have long been dismissed. And if you carefully read it, #1 doesn't really say anything.

Does AARP always write lists of statements and then negate each one by saying "nope"? If they do someone should tell them it's very annoying.

I always knew #3 and 4 were myths. If I drank 8 cups of water a day, my stomach would be upset. In fact, drinking too much water is as bad for you as not drinking enough and the amount one needs to drink depends upon one's mass, activity level and the temperature.

Temperature can hurt the body by stressing it and just like any extreme, cold is as damaging as heat, but cold in and of itself will not give you a "cold."

Wearing a hat in cold weather is still a good idea because all exposed parts of the body leak heat. I miss "dress hats" on men and wish the fedora would come back!

No, TurboTed, the AARP magazine does not say, 'Nope'. I only paraphrased the answers, and added the 'Nopes' just to annoy you.

Here's another one: if you believe the things AARP tells you, don't complain; just wait a minute and they will change their mind. (Hats off to Mark Twain)
