Interesting to me...

I wanted to ask for some other opinions on this:

Why is it that there has been so little comment, if any, on the 15 year old child that was raped for over two hours, at her homecoming dance, by about 10 perps, as approxomately 20 others came and went, some of whom actually stopped to watch and at least one became a participant in the rape. Nobody reported the incident for over 2 and a half hours!

Some of the reasons that have been given for the failure to report the incident include some pretty solid study about the herd affect that influences human behavior. But what does the relative silence say about the rest of us?

How often do we avoid a topic because its too much for us to handle? Should people just move on, knowing that something like this has happened? I tried, but I couldn't shake the thought that, unless there is some divine miraculous event, this child's life is changed FOREVER!!!

The last straw for me was when I heard one man on youTube suggest that since she entered the situation willingly by accepting an offer to drink with the perps, "maybe" she "deserved" to be gang raped! Where is the calvary? I had to ask somebody.

If we can't find a way to deal with incidents like this one, that would explain a lot. I know that, after all is said and done, many of us are probably relieved to know it happened somewhere else in somebody elses neighborhood and it was somebody elses daughter, right? Should our citizens just learn to expect this kind of behavior from our children and other adults?

It also occurred to me that if she were denied an abortion there would be picketing and posturing til the cows come home. Since it was "only" a rape, I assume the virtual silence means that this is less life threatening than an inconvenient childbirth? Weren't this child's rights violated?

What's up with that?

I thought it most interesting that the observers twittered what was going on but didnt call authorities.

But this leads me to ask, what is meant by 'rape'? I find it impossible to believer thstr this child was forcibly gang-raped, screaming for help, and nobody responded. Was she drunk? passed out? Were they on the dance floor? In a car? Where were the chaperons?

chngbyluv-- that fifth paragraph was unnecessary-- a gratuitous cheap shot. beneath you.

With all due respect, y'all....this story has been in the news .... up, down and inside out.

Depends on what you read, watch and/or listen to.

The story has not been ignored.

That's why it pays to get one's news from reliable sources.
I would suggest National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," daily on public radio, 5a - 9a and 4p to 6p.

There also was coverage on several of the cable TV news channels.
Not so much on FOX.
Wonder why?

True, true this story has been covered on the news, CNN, ABC and CBS. No one has dismissed this in anyway.

What really concerns me it that this generation is becomeing cold to each other, very cold. It is almost as if they have lost compassion. I don't know

This tragedy is repeated in communities across America on a daily basis. The difference in this gang rape is that it caught national attention. The fact that many people feel that somehow the victim has some part in the crime exacerbates the problem. In most states children under the age of 16 cannot give consent even if they say yes, don't cry out or are incapacitated by alcohol or other drugs. Rapes of minors are common in this country and are largely condoned by society. Why doesn't the cardinal report rapes of young boys by the priest? Why is there no public outcry wwhen 13 and 14 year old girls become pregnant? Why do young men feel it is okay to participate in gang rape? There is a deeper problem in the American culture than we are willing to admit and until we do so, these crimes will continue.

Actually, Quippian, I heard about it on Fox first. Then I heard about it on several conservative radio talk shows. The underlying problems associated with this particular rape are still being dissected there.

Raped is rape, as we all know If you forced another to sexually pleased you. I do agree w/ Obamamama, chngdyluv, How could anyone even dare think that if this is another child of someone else, community or state we are pleased. I'm sure I didn't type it as you have thought or how it came out in print. Nonetheless, If this child was nude in public,(or anyone touched her)
This female was bodily raped. She didn't given HER permission. She shouldn't have been touched even if she was intoxicated. She shouldn't have been raped by friend or foe. This particular. RAPED, Chngby are being dissected by UNDERLYING problems, What could be underlying or why dissected?
Rape is Raped if forced to interact in sexual actions without permission. Rape is forced to do what a rapist asked you to do or you do without permission. There shouldn't be any problems, there should be underlying problems. There seems to be a rapist out there. This child will lived with and will be abnormal the rest of her life!

We have heard of date raped, gang rapes, and even raped by family member. However, one is raped. IT'S RAPE and those involved when they are caught, should pay the price. He or they should spend time in prison and stay unless this young lady, or family give their permisssions he/they should be release into the community without a sexual rapist wrapped completely to their name whenever they are set freed. It's a felony by all who raped her.

Yes, it's an interested situation!

The dissection is happening none the less, Augrose. It's not only concentrating in the rape, but on the attitudes of the people who watched and did not report the incident. It's also a discussion about those who watched and made a conscious decision to participate and what all this says about our society.

The current discussion includes quite a bit more than whether she gave her permission or not or whether she was drunk or unconscious. As far as I am concerned, these are considerations that are not relevant to the problems in the minds of the men and women who allowed this to happen. This is because she is a child who is now permanently scarred by this act. The punishment should be equally as permanent.

I don't think I used the word "pleased". Unfortunately, there are people who go on as if this is of little or no concern to them because it did not happen in a way that would directly affect their lives. I understand that you might not be one of them, but this is the attitude that may have a profound influence on whether this could have happened in the first place...anywhere and any time that it has happened.
