I agree, it is very sad. I'm not even sure I know what to say to comfort you, except I understand your pain. I'm sure she felt she had no choice, but I can't imagine doing that (I have 3 cats, too!) Don't know what I would do...I hate to even think about it! I don't want to judge her...not knowing all of the circumstances. She must be in pain, too. I'm sorry, franjo.
I have heard of many people doing this to cease their animals suffering.
I know they go to the other side and live in bliss because they have souls.
So which would your pet prefer? , suffering or bliss?
It's true, if she couldn't find homes for them and the shelter did not have room, it's better than turning them out on the street and having them starve to death and suffer. It's just very, very sad. I wonder if she tried putting an ad in the newspaper or other avenues to try to find homes for them first? Having them put to sleep to end their suffering if they are sick is one thing...doing it because you're moving is another. I think we all agree we'd do it (and some of us have had to make that difficult decision) when our pets are ill.
There are rescue groups for cats - but a lot of the rescue groups are full because of the economy - a hard choice to make no matter what the cause is. If the cats were old, it would have been hard to find a new home for them. Sad no matter what.
I would've boarded the cats somewhere until I found a home for them. Or not moved somewhere that did not accept cats. Although, I am glad she didn't abandon them to the streets.
When we were staying at a hotel, and looking for a house to buy, we found a business who kept the dogs for us. They were happy to have 2 large dogs on their property when the business was closed.
It sounds like she gave this a lot of thought and felt this was the only alternative so they wouldn't suffer.
i read that a lady at the site took them home with her so they didn't have to be killed !
It is very sad that this decision had to be made by the EON's member. Unfortunately what is happening due to the economy is that many people are having their houses foreclosed upon or can no longer afford their current rent and these folks have little choice but to find a place where they can afford to live. And in too many of these places, the landlord will not allow pets.
At the Shelter where I volunteer, we are an open admission shelter which means we take in any animal that is brought to us for surrender; the "no-kill" shelters can say NO for whatever reason. We currently have over 125 cats/kittens available for adoption in our shelter as well as numerous cats with their litters in foster homes. We have cats who live uncaged in our Cat Lounge as well as cats in cages in the Cat Adoption room, our Overflow area, a part of our Exam Room, the Lobby and in our Small Animal Room. When people come in to surrender their animal(s) we are honest and tell them the reality is that the animal may have to be euthanized. For instance, before this unbelievable influx of cats, a surrendered cat who had a slight URI could be medicated in our Quarantine area until healthy enough to be put up for adoption; a surrendered cat who had a long-term underlying illness like diabetes could have still been put up for adoption and we would have been in a position to keep her/his diabetes under control with insulin; an elderly cat in good health could be put up for adoption. We can no longer do these things. Although I do have to mention that two weeks ago, we had a wonderful family adopt a 20 year old cat who was surrendered to us but who was so active, etc., we were able to put her in the Cat Lounge.
Someone in financial distress is unable to afford to board an animal until they find a place where the animal could live with them or until they have exhausted all other avenues. I guess what I am trying to say is this person may have had no recourse but to do what must have been very difficult for her to do.
Vulcan96, did you mean the cats that franjo posted about when you wrote:

I hope so! That would be wonderful news!
Good news! The vet's assistant took all three, and gave them a good home. They are three very LUCKY cats.

So glad to hear the good news of their adoption. I couldn't imagine that any Vet would have put three cats to sleep just because the lady couldn't find a home for them. My Vet feels like I do about animals, he keeps them rather than putting them to sleep, until he finds someone who will adopt them. Often that is someone in his office....
