Here in Tuscarora we hear stories of all sorts of wildlife, but mostly wildcats and coyotes. Not sure about the coyote, but my older son hit a wildcat about 4 miles from home a year or so ago. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has seen one around here.
We've had coyotes around here for years. They've decimated the feral cat population on Grand Island on the Niagara River. They've been seen in North Tonawanda, south of the city of Niagara Falls. At least one person has been attacked & bitten by one, which is unusual because they usually avoid human contact.
Newslady, by wildcat, do you mean bobcat? They are mush smaller that a mountain lion but can still be dangerous to local house cats and humans if they have rabies. It just seemed odd to me that a mountain lion would be found around Batavia. They usually stay up in the mountains, higher elevations.
Yes, I meant bobcat. That's what you get when you write when you should be sleeping.
I don't live near Batavia, rather outside Corning NY in the hills of Tuscarora. It's southeast Steuben County and truely mountainous. South of us is Tioga Couty Pa, a thinly populated region where life is more simple. To the west is farm country, much of it either lying fallow now or being worked by the Amish. North are the Finger Lakes. Only by going east (or hopping on a four-lane and traveling a while) do you find the strip malls and industry.
I have the best of both worlds here - a truly rural home area with all the modern conveniences only an hour or so away.
And bobcats.
Yup... we've had coyotes and mt. lions here in the Rochester area, too... Seen them up in the Bristol Hills and Livonia area. I think someone said they were as close as Pittsford and Penfield, only about 10-15 miles out of the metro area... at least the coy-dogs.

Oh yea... another story to tell is the black bear that was shot out of a tree in the City of Rochester! Amazing! They tried to use tranquillizer gun but it got dizzy and fell out of the tree and broke its neck. People were really upset by it. They should have just quaranteened the area and let it come down and not stood around and stared at it. chezzz..!
