In search of a stimulus

If you found a box lying next to the street in front of your home and inside was $10,000 in cash, what would you do? Would you stash it away for a short period of time, spend it on something you really need or invest it? Would anyone call the police?

I would return it. It belongs to someone.

When my kids were little we found a $10 bill on the sidewalk along a strip mall. We walked back in the other direction and saw a not terribly well dressed family hunting the ground for something. When we asked them what was wrong, they said the daughter had lost a $10. I returned it and my kids were all very impressed as the family seemed so happy to find it.

10K in cash in a box on the street is probably not the hard earned life savings of a family or individual.
I think I'd have a little fun with it. Maybe invest in lots.

Lots of whiskey and diesel to keep my boat moving.

I think I would first put an ad in the paper saying I found a large sum of money and if anyone lost it, they should post an ad in the same paper stating the amount they lost, the denomination, and what the money was in, along with a phone number. That way no one would be calling me and I would know who really lost it, and who's full of bull. I don't think I'd turn it over to the police until after trying to find the owner myself. I trust no one.

What's the old saying/unwritten rule? .... Finders keepers, loosers weepers? Then again, there is the concious playing a role here, too.

The statement that the money was in the street in front of your home, not actually on your property has a bearing here too. I would definitely report it and "hopefully" if unclaimed it would become mine!
If it was obtained illegally or stolen, the loser would not come forward. On the other hand, the person who it may have been the victim here, could claim it, as well.

I'd hide it for a week or two and the stash it and spend it very slowly. Possession is 9/10th of the law.
