My Memory Garden

My Memory Garden

There has been extensive research on the brain and its many functions. It has been found that specific areas of the brain control specific functions. For the past two days I have thought about the area that stores our memories, and call it my memory garden.

In it, each memory has it own space, is visual, audible, and filled with our reactions to it. I can go into my memory garden, spend time with all the people I have known, and relive the time spent with them down through the years. I can see them as they were when young and as they aged with the passage of time; also, hear the tones of their voice and the emotions they expressed.

I can visit the places I have been in the past. Even though time has brought changes it cannot alter what is recorded there. Some remain as beautiful and pleasant as I knew them. Others are cold, desolate and are filled with the pain and grief I experienced there.

There has been untold millions of dollars spent on the exploration of space and many new discoveries made and stored in the memory garden. To me, the greatest unexplored area is that of the mind, without which we could not explore and learn anything.

Good point. Learning the secrets of the brain would be quite fascinating.

Places in my memory garden contain no desolation or pain. Perhaps I've just not visited those places? Even those times that were difficult are remembered with some joy and gratitude.

Whoops! I just made a quick visit to a place that was painful and scary. All it takes is someone jostling my memory - and my willingness to take off the rose-colored glasses.

Nice writing Btylr, but I thought the mind forgot pain. For some reason I thought I heard this a long time ago, that the brain does not remember pain or what it felt like.

I enoyed this writing Btylr. As to forgetting pain, I think we can not recall intense pain but I do remember the pain of child birth and the pain from my numerous knee replacements. It is a blessing to have most erased.
I, too, go to my memory bank frequently. I like exploring there and do not think we can be accused of living in the past. I guess it depends on what the past holds, as to how you want to visit it. An awkward sentence I just wrote. Sorry!!
