EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS DILEM

I had a neighbor tell me today that Obama has ruined what has taken her three years to accomplish by extending the length of eligibility for unemployment insurance. Her son was fired from a job that she had to force him to get and now he is back on her sofa playing video games. He has not looked for new employment since receiving his first compensation check and is eagerly awaiting news of extended benefits.

Working with the population that I do, I have heard of many people who did not want to work anyway, extolling Obama's new welfare largesse. For these people, I hate it. For those who really can't find employment and are unable to meet basic needs without unemployment benefits, I applaud it. But how many times are benefits to be extended? What is going on with the creation of new jobs that has been so touted?

Anyone have any suggestions as to how the problem of long term joblessness should be handled? How many times unemployment benefits should be extended and raised?

If your neighbor raised a slackass son who would rather play video games than man up and be a productive citizen, he/she has only themself to thank. No politics will change lazy parenting.

I know that you're asking a question and I'm trying very hard to form an answer other than let the lazy be homeless for a week and see if that doesn't change their minds. That's not very liberal of me, is it?

I have no answer, but a "friend" was laid off in Jan and saw her last week, I said have you found a job yet, she said "I haven't been looking, this is the first time in my life I've had money coming in that I didn't have to go out and earn." was very surprised, did not realize she was that way. Also she can't wait for the "free health" care she is going to get, and is trying to find a place to get a free flu shot, yet she still smokes, I told her the flu shot was only 2 packs of cig. said she wasn't spending fun money on shots and health care.???????????????????/
Beyond me. When I was young and got laid off my job we actually had to go and look for a job and the places we went had to sighn a card before we could draw unemployment.

get used to the effects of "free Obama money" because a lot of people believe in it and it buys a lot of votes.I talked to a social worker that goes to my church and she says her biggest difficulty is getting her clients to believe that they should look for work.

Is this the first time some of you have known people who are out of work and receiving unemployment benefits? Because what you are describing is not a new phenomenon, by any means.

As one of the unemployed who fills out the online form every two weeks (my benefits ran out a month ago), I have to certify under the penalty of perjury that I have looked for work. I have three notebooks of where I applied, with whom I talked, the interviews I went on and I have been called to the unemployment office to prove I've been looking.

There are no jobs in my small town and I've expanded my search to nationwide.

If they are bilking the system by lying then they need to be turned in. They are committing both perjury and fraud.

I also question why someone who was fired would be receiving unemployment in the first place? (the last time I checked) In this state, if you were fired for cause there are no benefits. Period.

I suspect a little poetic license has been taken with these stories to prove a point of view.

why in the world would it be obama's fault if her lazy son is paring his ass on HER couch? get off the couch and get a job or GET OUT..here's a legal 30day notice to quit...be employed or be gone in 30days...,,it isn't the govt's job to make your kid go to work

Isn't it amazing that a mother of a lazy son would blame Obama on his situation. I would think it was years of bad parenting and not just 9 months of Obama being President. Same with the woman who "supposedly" is bilking the system of monies that she doesn't have to earn. I am with Two here, I have never heard anyone just drawing money and not being accountable to the "job search". I have been on unemployment and it doesn't work that way.

There is plenty of hatred for President Obama and it does not surprise me that a woman with a son who does not want to be bothered working would blame that on the President she already does not like. It is probably her fault that there are leaves falling off the trees that need to be raked and it is his fault the neighbor's dog is watering her bushes.

I've been on unemployment and if I could not prove that I had looked for work, including using the state employment department, I would not get my check.

There will always be some people who game the system; that is no reason to deny it to those who truly need it.
