Thoughts on War

Anyone have an idea why Pres. Obama won't end the wars? He seems to be carefully thinking thiings over, but in the end it sounds like that stupid General will get more young kids to go over there and die. I was hopeful, that he was giving it thought instead of just sending them, but I recently heard he is leaning towards sending more. Why can't they just come home. I wish he or someone could give me a real answer. There is nothing we can do about the place, it is what it is, and if anything we are antagonizing the infighting, just as we did in Iraq(And don't forget that war isn't over yet, either). I think that as our presidenet, he should want to end the wars that are destroying lives, families, and even money that they say we cannot afford for health care. I am so sick of it. I have written Whitehouse.gov, but I am doubtful anyone reads or cares what I have to say.

It seems that President Obama is in one of those dammed if you do dammed if you don't situations. Thankfully, he', unlike Bush, is taking time to analyze the situation. I want all of our troops out, but I know it must be done in the best way, and thankfully the president is consulting people a lot more knowledgeable about this than I.

It seems that the main thing we've accomplished in both of these wars is to disperse AQ to all corner of the world!

While doing a search for something else, I found this blog from a few years ago. While not 100% in agreement, some of the statements ring very true in my ears. view link (partial paste)

"The war in Iraq is like all the wars since 1945. The burden is being borne entirely by members of the military and their families. The rest of us go right on with the good life as if no war was even taking place.

This is wrong, though I'm not exactly sure how to fix it. It has always seemed to me that when soldiers go to war, the whole country ought to go to war. In other words, each of us should do something to contribute. Instead of cutting taxes, Congress ought to levy a war tax. That would be a novel idea — to actually pay for a war as we fight it, instead of adding the cost to the already-unpayable public debt.

That would also disconcert the chicken hawks and other neoconservatives who want tax cuts and a war, too.

Years ago, an old Marine general by the name of Smedley Butler suggested that the minute war breaks out, all of the defense and armaments industries should be nationalized and all of their owners and workers drafted and paid the same wages that are paid the military. There is a great deal of merit in that idea, because it's repulsive to think that some Americans are making big profits out of a war that is killing young men who, even if they lived, could never hope to be rich as the CEOs of the war industries.

I've always had to part company with my libertarian brothers and sisters on this issue, because I think we made a big mistake in going to an all-volunteer Army. Granted, the old system — with plenty of outs for rich kids and those with influential parents — was no good. What I've always advocated is universal military training, with no exceptions for anybody. In other words, I prefer the good old citizen Army." (more at link)

President Obama is not working in a vaccum....Both historically and traditionally the military is conservative. The command structure he inherited demonstrates this. I am not sure the president is a hawk but I "kinda" think he is no dove either. American exceptionalism and the concept of manifest destiny are in play here. I pray for an end to all war...PEACE.....I find though that the nature of human kind and the societal underpinnings we seem to cling to with our last breath are in opposition to any peace, competition Vs. co-operation, realist thought, neo-conservative visions of American Empire all speak to this. This weekend I saw that he quietly attended the arrival home of fallen soldiers, with all my heart I believe he is affected by this huge loss and will do all that is in his power to prevent it...

I think before he got in, he wasn't familiar with what he was getting into and perhaps he's doing the best job he, or maybe anyone can. I believe he cares. He doesn't have many moments where he isn't constantly working-for us. He has taken opposition like no other pres. ever had to. There is a lot that we don't know about that the pres. and generals do. I want the soldiers back, too. I'm against war altogether but we are living in a world with a framework we can't force to adapt to each of us. It's dangerous and courageous to be Obama today. Unbelievable how open people are about their aggression and acting out with guns and threats. What a nightmare. I can't help wondering if Conservatism is an illness.

It seems as sweet as all the sh-- we were given in elementary school. Washington and the cherry tree, etc. We've seen what was left out of the info we got about history and politics. So thinking that any one person is really in charge is one of those nice stories about how much better America is.No, I don't want to be anywhere else. I just think about what government is, really. And who you have to please, and why. I think daily he has to pray and then hope to strike a balance between what is expected of him and what he feels is right to do. Even Democrats give him opposition. It's no accident that Bush got away with horrendous changes and crimes against people and got us into a heinous mess, but remember how Conservative just kept saying he's protecting us and the Dems are stupid to not want war. People even had a strong attitude of having to win. I never could believe how crooked Bush was and figured some people probably went along because it was dangerous not to.

When I think about how evil and corrupt Bush is, I'm glad that he was also inept. If he had been more capable, we'd really be screwed.

rsb....Hard to imagine how more screwed we could possibly be, save having committed more lives and money. There is no real fix. We are hated for staying and will be hated for leaving. We have literally destroyed Iraq. Having no military and no infrastructure, they make an easy target for Iran. I think Saddam ruled with an iron fist because he had to. At least he created a modicum of order and was pulling his reluctant country out of the stone age. Perhaps he understood the culture of the middle east and the psychology of the people far more than we will ever be able to. I certainly admit to a lack of comprehension. These folks have been fighting each other for thousands of years. Why can't they seem to barter a peace between themselves? Do they conceive what the cost of constant war has been? Here, in the cradle of civilization, the vast majority live as they always have, barely surviving. Where they should have had a head start on social evolution, they instead have spun their wheels. And lest anyone think this is they way things should be....I would have to disagree. It is a gross misuse of human intelligence for people to merely survive hand-to- mouth, when the capacity and the ability was there to accomplish so much more.

Just to make myself clear. I am sure Pres Obama is doing his best. And I would not want to be in his shoes. It's true no matter what he does, at least half the country will say it is wrong. I was disapointed that most of the elections yesterday leaned towards the conservatives.
I agree that I have never seen such hatefullness directed at a president. At least not so loudly and so obviously. We all hated GWB but didn't go around saying we think he is A,B, or C evil thing that Obama is said to be, nor did we wish for his death. I surely wished him to go away though, and he has. Finally. Strange that Sarah Palin won't go away at all. But what a mess Bush left us. I think one of Obamas best qualities is his cool temprement. And we can surely say he has made friends with a good part of the world on our behalf. We were looked at so badly for 8 years. Now at least, the whole world doesn't hate us, just the middle east. And who could blame them.
But I want these wars to end. I know we destroyed Iraq, but it seems like they are continuing to destroy eachother, so why don't we step out of the way. Same in Afghanistan. Maybe some of the hostility would cease if there was not a feeling that they were being overrun with Americans..
Guess I have no answers. Only questions. I wish I could actually sit down and talk to the President for awhile and get his honest feelings about these wars.
