Shopgirl

I just finished the novella 'Shopgirl' by Steve Martin. Very short, only 130 pages, but most enjoyable. I recommend it highly, it is sharply observed and well-written. Martin is really a multi-talented man (author, playwright, musician, actor, comedian) and I hope he will produce more books in the future. Take a day and read this, it's a real treat.

It was also made into a movie with Steve Martin and Claire Danes. I saw it listed on a local channel just last night!

I read this many years ago and have thought about it often. I had the very strange feeling Steve Martin was the shop girl.
Gene Wilder has written a wonderful small book I recommend.

Yes, I ran across the movie on TV and watched almost all of it so decided to read the book. Both are very good.

I read this a few years ago too, and enjoyed it. Steve Martin is a very talented writer, as well as a "wild and crazy guy". I can also recommend his memoir--Born Standing Up.

It was sad reading his memoir because of the distant relationship he had with his father; you could really feel how much that hurt Martin. I hope he keeps writing, he has a lot of talent in that area.

Did anyone catch that documentary they had on the author who wrote "Where the Wild Things Are" Maurice Sednak(sp)??? It was on either SHotime or HBO. It was kind of sad, how he was affected by the Linberg baby kidnapping and that here he was 80 and hadn't found satisfaction with his work.

Any of you seen the movie, Where the Wild Things Are?

I both read Steve Martin's book and saw the movie and enjoyed both of them. I read somewhere that he wrote the book for his daughter. This wisdom and sensitivity were surprising to me - although I don't quite know why I'd be surprised!

I loved "The Pleasure of My Company" by Steve Martin. Absolutely hilarious - the man's a genius. I thought "Shopgirl" was OK, guess I'll have to watch the movie when I get back to the U.S.
