I've read somewhere that the recommended amount of homework is about 10 minutes per school grade; so fifth graders should have about 50 minutes, 6th graders about an hour. That means it gets worse as they move up. Then I read that the government wants to extend the school day longer; guess I need to quit reading!! But I agree, they need some play time, and children need chores, too.
Yes I have read that Obama is wanting the kids to go to school longer. I do not agree. Kids need time to be kids before they have to grow up and work all the time. And if they are so busy having to go to school and do homework all the time then who is going to teach them the basics, like cooking and cleaning.
I know a first grader and a kindergartener that have homework nearly every night. Sometimes the first grader is at his 45 min to an hour. Seems like a lot a homework. I remember most always I could get all of mine finished before I got home. Most folks in the younger generations do not think the basics are as important as our generation and the ones before.
I guess we will have a bunch of smart kids that will live in filth and stay hungry or live on junk food.
Homework is too often done by the parents, supervised by them or not done at all. Home time should be home time and school time longer to do all the work there. This would help parents and kids have family time together.
I agree, now if the schools would see it that way.
Kids need more time to be kids !
