So very sad. Franklin is a beautiful town but I think this was their main industry.
Very true - to both. It is sad, and that certainly was their biggest employer - 1100 people working at one place in a town of 8800 or so. Of course - not all the employees lived in Franklin. There were some who came from North Carolina (Franklin is about 11 miles north of the state line of VA/NC) and surrounding areas. BUT - the economic impact of this place closing is bound to be devastating..........
I was born in Franklin, my parents were living in Holland. My dad worked at the mill as a foreman, my uncle was a truck driver for them. My cousin is a supervisor there and his wife works in the office.I remember when It was Camp Paper Mill. The mill gave off a strong pungent odor, and when the wind was blowing in your direction there was a saying. "Old Lady Camp must have her drawers down today".All that will be gone I suppose. It would be great for it to come back as a locally owned company again but it is doubtful. This sort of thing is happening all over the country and it is very saddening.
Yeah - I always know when we're close to Franklin without even opening my eyes - that odor always smelled like cooked cabbage to me - very STRONG cooked cabbage! Same smell comes from Terre Haute, Indiana - they have a paper mill there too - or they did. It's been a while since I've been out in that direction........
Unfortunately, the trickle down effect will be devastating! The suppliers who supply to the lunch counters where some eat lunch....
