Speaking of Marijuana

This goes under the heading of either "Misunderstood Composers" or "Wow! They really don't get it" This is Lawrence Welk's band doing what Lawrence calls a "Modern Spiritual" The song is "One Toke Over the Line" if you can believe it.
I can't help but imagine that even in Welk's band that there weren't a few musicians laughing their ass off. Even the guy that ran the bubble machine probably had to keep his hands over his mouth to keep from howling. Meanwhile the Lennon sisters were back in their dressing room doing a doobie. ~In first reply

Lawrence was a naif perhaps? And given his "straight" rep, no perhaps about it.

I think everyone but, Welk knew what they were singing. Bet it was hard to keep a straight face during that one.

The accordion player doing the introduction is Myron Cohan and if you notice he looks like he has trouble introducing the song as he is about to laugh.

This is just beyond strange. My favorite part is when Lawrence calls the song a "modern spiritual". So true, so true.....

Mike, I've seen this before but it was definitely worth another look. It's just SUCH a hoot! Was there anyone any straighter than Lawrence Welk (a-one and a-two)?

The thing is, I always enjoyed his show as a kid. He was a great musician and I still have songs like "Calcutta" running through my mind. I want to make a correction. I said the accordionist's name was Myron Cohen but what I meant was Myron Floren. Myron Cohen was one of the funniest Jewish comedians from the 20's till the 60's
