Whats the word on solar for single family homes that don't have the acreage to put up a wind generator?

My feeling is that you start small and work your way up from there. There is a group here on Eons where we are trying to get some conversation going about how to work your way off the grid. Check us out. This new thread deals with DIY solar panels. view link

Solar tubes are a good way to start and cost only about 200.00 and can be installed by yourself if you are handy ,in about 2 hours. This is passive heating. I installed 2 ,one in an inside bathroom that never sees natural light and in my kitchen which gets only am light. I still on occasion try to turn off my switch because they are bright. They are also pretty.
An attic solar fan is to be my next project.

I am eating lots of beans and capturing the resultant methane in plastic bags . I think I can cut my heating bills in half .

Charles, a VAWT like the Mariah Windspire doesn't have a very big footprint. The spinner is less than 4 foot diameter. One machine (around $5000) could supply about half the the electricity needs for an average family. There are wind machines in the works that will sit on the ridge of the roof and spin parallel with the roofline.
