How is your HDL and ratio? That's more important than total.... The short answer is take your blood chemistry results to a nutritionist for evaluation and suggestion. Some doctors know about this, but others are too quick to write prescriptions. A nutritionist can evaluate your food intake and give suggestions to avoid meds.
Exercise, cutting down/out saturated fats, and adding good fats to the diet are sound places to start. Good fat from nuts and seeds are essential. Flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, and most nuts are great sources of Omega 3's and 6's. These are essential fats that we require everyday.

Thanks, good approach. Will ask my doctor when I see him next week.

Where did you take the 25 minute stress test and what protocol was used??
The Cooper Clinic in Dallas used the Balke Protocol.
My VO2 max was estimated to be 51.09 based on the completion time of 25 minutes. A formula is used to estimate V02 max= (1.444 x actual time) + 14.99.
Here's a link to explain the test:

I get a physical once a year in Feb. My Dr. usually just gives me results as "normal" but here are the figures I get:
Blood Sugar 90 mg
Vit D 48 ng
Cholesterol 218 - up because I have been slacking
HDL 89
LDL 118
Triglycerides 45
Bone Density -.13 spine and -1.23 hip, am due for another soon
Passed my stress test, nurse said it was very good
Am at my max weight, 140, at 5'3.5", it's time to get busy...
Taking no meds
I will be taking my physical tomorrow 12-11-09.
Dot, glad to see that your Doctor tested for D. Vitamin D is a key since so many people are short on D and it low levels are associated with cancer.. I've been taking 5000 iu supplement since last Spring when my numbers were low. Since I no longer drink Milk and have to be more careful with sun exposure the supplements are key to keeping healthy levels of D.
