Preamble of the United States
President Barack Obama said in Turkey : "We do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."
I found this very interesting.
Do you know the Preamble for your state? . .

QWhen the movie "the tencommandments first came out the asvertising for the movie was placing these cardboard "ten commandment in from of office buildings. I know there was a law suit against it. I cannot find out how ur was settled. I hapen to believe a little knowledge of the ten commandments might be helpful in an age where moral and civic responsibility have difficuty being taught. I believe it is he first one:
"Thou shall have no other gods before me.“ that is the problem.(?)he atheists and the wiccans feel left out. they are the ones who act as if it is Law for most people they are guides. As a person of a faith I have never understood how a principal of a school reading a short a passage from the bible could be so damaging.

The first commandment is not a problem for me. I take no God before any other God. That was written in by Abraham and Moses to force acceptance of their single all-powerful God. Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship this God, by different names and under different cultural creeds. Peace be with all of them . With all of the various religions, the closest we can come to peace is freedom of religion and tolerance.
.
That is what it is all about. i am not to sure about the term "force." i see it more as a test which took a while, the people had to give up their slave self perception and be wiilling to accept.
wonder what people of this country need to "give up" to accept as you say "tolerance' and accepting the pronciples of all members of society?

The only religion that forces another religion on oneself is the Muslim religion by extremist - that is why those overseas have said over and over again that Americans and others overseas should follow Allah and if not you will be killed. Freedom to chose your religion is not allowed. It is theirs or death.

They wouldn't have to give up very much; just learn to appreciate a person for their honesty, kindness, fairness, selflessness and support of the common good, instead of being suspicious because of their religion, denomination and beliefs. The Ten commandments don't fit everyone perfectly, but they go at least 80% of the way. Tolerance is required for the other 20%.
.
no. why did you focus on people? I was talking about what behaviors nalues perceptions need to be given up to have tolernce in our culture. 2. Islam is very different then the Judeo-christian set of values that is a fact. but please do not say they aer the only religion that has attempted to force their relilgion onto others. Have you met any Cathars recently?
3. I used the term force in the context of the ten commandment debate in america.

Everyone should live the Ten Commandments - if everyone did this world would not be a bad place to live in. Respect, honesty and dignity and all those said by KerryCork would mean something in society, instead of those words being trampled and put in the gutter like today.
Catholics in the time of the Crusades, etc did offensive things, and they admitted to it and stopped it long ago, but Islam is spreading like wild-fire and once you are Islam there is no leaving like you can do in the Catholic Church or any Church, except Islam. Once Islam you will always be Islam for death is the only way out of it. Look at the family killings and stonings of women in their country and this country that the media is not putting in its papers or on TV.
I felt i hd to respond to this
"no. why did you focus on people?"
what else is there cuture is mde by people as is the vaues of a culture. i happen to believe in frre will so i focus on people not institutions political parties religions.
"Everyone should live the Ten Commandments"
i have no desie to push my beliefs on anyone if you believe in a pantheon of gods that'd cool you do not believe in them thats cool.
As i said number one tends to be the hardest at a group level at a personal the one i have difficulty with is number 10 (the only emotional based one)
