The U.S. is a nation in which the majority of the people are Christians. However, the nation has no official religion, in order to preserve and guarantee the right of religious freedom. The various states refused to ratify the constitution unless it was free of any religious preference or sanction.

In view of our religious freedom, I do not understand why some citizens complain about the Ten Commandments being posted as a monument in courthouses, prayer and invocations at public events, and the public plea for guidance from God.

The Ten Commandments have no authoritative function in law or government. Like the golden rule, they are moral guidelines. Insert your own God, and go from there. If everyone obeyed the general intent of the Ten Commandments, we could tear down the courthouses and leave the monument. Public prayer never harmed anyone. Those who are offended by it should review their degree of tolerance, for the common good.

I am an agnostic, but I support freedom of religion, and I encourage study of religion, all religions, along with a study of human nature.
