BOOTCAMP Upgrade coming

I use Bootcamp to get me into Windows Vista on my Mac Mini, in a separate partition. It works just fine. My Mini is about 4 years old, and just doesn't have the horsepower to be able to use the virtualization options like Parallels, VMFusion, or Virtual Box; there's just too much being asked of it to run two operating systems concurrently.

So, B'camp was my choice -

I read an article at MacRumors that Apple will not be officially supporting using Bootcamp for Windows Seven until "later this year". Sooooo, if you (like me!) went out and bought the $50 upgrade on the cheap from Amazon during the summer, it might be best to wait until Apple pushes out Bootcamp support for Seven before actually upgrading your Windows Partition to Seven.

The flip side of this is that it has been tested out and it works fine; people have been able to upgrade Vista to Seven on a Mac using the current version of Bootcamp - it's just not yet being "supported" by Apple.

I cant have the two systems running together But the guy that invented Dircect TV and a host of other items, a classmate of mine, keeps sending me files that can only be open with Keynote. I just got the newest 09 iLife but iWork, for a person who knows nothing about spread sheet and needs no elaborate
word processor, for me is a waste of money. However, having something that can open a good number of files would be good. Does anyone have any idea how I can avoid buying iWork and still have across the board file opening capabilities?

Also is the anyone who knows of a "must have" Apple related item? Like a certain software, a certain website. a certain download, or super Apple trick that everyone should know.

By the way, Winesaps are at their peek right now.

For me, I really like iWork, even though I have to buy it. The iWeb software combined with MobileMe lets me manage three websites. And iWork now has a beta program that lets you upload documents to a free 1GB space on iWork.com so you can collaborate with colleagues on the document. Working on our RV chapter's by-laws now and an invitation to a buddy rally for next year. iWork is "must have" software for me.

Give me a good old Stayman. Bought a bushel last weekend and have eaten over half!

Pond,

you could try either OpenOffice or NeoOffice - bothe are "Almost identical to" MSOffice suites, and are both freebies. OPenOffice can be run on either a mac or a PC, but NeoOffice is for the mac only. However, they can handle and create .doc, .xls, and .ppt files with ease.

I run Windows because I need MSVisio for the office, and there isn't any Mac equivalent that can do all that Visio can......

Stayman and Winesaps?

wazzatt?

Apples, Pete, apples! What else? LOL! Some here call them just Stayman, some call them Winesap and some insist on Stayman Winesap. Any way you say it, they make terrific pies and eating.

Pond,

First off, regarding your friend that is sending Keynote slides - ask him to save them as PowerPoint and use NeoOffice. Or have him save them as a ,pdf and open them with Preview. Regarding iWork as unneeded - NeoOffice will do fine with spreadsheets and word processing, but I really recommend you se TextEdit for your word processing. It comes with Mac OS X, and handles all basic writing needs. Even opens and saves Microsoft Word files!

Other "must have" items include:

MacUpdate.com & VersionTracker.com/macosx are great sites for safely downloading shareware and free ware.

view link has everything from pdf's of the manuals, to troubleshooting tips and discussions, software updates and downloads, and an amazing KnowledgeBase of tens of thousands of questions - with answers!

If you are near an Apple store, the next time you buy a Mac, seriously consider the $99 One To One program - view link In addition to immediate help as the new Mac is set up, you get a personal one to one session with an Apple Genius or rep EVERY WEEK for a year. You can use the time for anything Mac related, from third party software setup to in depth instruction on a variety of software packages.

Want to keep up with the web traffic concerning Mac? MacSurfer.com is a great daily summary of the major Mac web sites. view link is the ultimate snarky, irreverent pro Mac anti Windows news site - sort of like "The Daily Show" for Mac users

Apple has a ton of great tutorials at view link - look at the list on the right side of the scree. Whether you are just getting started, or are interested in a a refresher course - these are well worth investigating.

And of course, the Mac Pack s a great place for discussions.
