First 9 Weeks

The first 9 weeks has come and gone and I think this year will be very challenging in more ways than one. The whole 6th grade 3 teachers with 23 kiddos each and we are departmentalized (with the exception of maybe 7 to 8 out of each class), don't seem to want to learn, they are there to socilaize and the parents think their child does no wrong even when shown their child's work or lack of (which is mostly the case). I am amazed at the lack of parenting, they want to be a "friend" and teachers should just give them grades and not worry about behavior either. Can you tell I have just about had it all ready. I love teaching and the 7 or 8 in each class deserve better from the other students. Just venting, it was a tough week.

Hey Scarlet, You likely haven't had a reply because most are in the boat with you,,,LOL
Even in elementary we have similiar issues, although middle school must be worse. Hang in there, We all 'feel your pain'.....Thanksgiving is in how many weeks?

Hi Scarlet (hope your doing OK) it only gets worse on the high school level, I actually had 5 parents show for parent/teacher conferences (more than I've had in 5 years) but most came to complain about the teachers. Not one seemed to care if it was their child not doing the work.....only about how it was the teachers fault that their precious, innocent child had an "F" even if you showed them the work. And the parents expect them to answer their cell phones when they call or to text them back when they send a text....even tho they are in class....go figure....parents are a strange lot.

Evening all....we had parent conferences a week ago....in our case we still get a pretty good turnout for our 7th and 8th graders but our HS teachers see the same Tootsie sees.....our District is fortunate in being basically rural (3 small towns feed the schools) and the parents are still pretty much involved....but it has changed in the past 32 years I've been teaching here.....I hope you all can "hang in there".....I've convinced myself that I cannot "save all the students", but will find satisfaction in the few I can influence......have a good weekend....TC

I feel the same way. But remember, those kids that come everyday to learn make it all worth it. We just have to keep trying to get through to the other ones. Sometimes they surprise you! :-)
