Failure to install Vista Service Pack 2

I got a popup message from Microsoft Updater advising me that a critical update was ready to be installed. I clicked on the icon in my tray and the update downloaded. It proceeded thru the acceptance screen, then declared that the update had completed and advised me to restart the computer. I went through this three times, and at each attempt, when the computer restarted it says that the update failed to install and returned me to the previous configuration. What am I doing wrong?

Have you installed Vista Service Pack 1?

Good question....I would assume that I have, since I subscribe for automatic updates. Where can I look to verify which updates have been installed?

Go to Control Panel > Windows Update and click on View update history (top left)

To install Service Pack 2 you need to turn off your antivirus software for the installer to work. If you want to do this without being connected to the internet you can download the Sevice Pack here view link

For 32 bit systems choose x86
For 64 bit systems choose x64

If your system came with Service Pack 1 already installed : check Control Panel > System to confirm.

I turned off my firewall and attempted another install. Still no luck. Then I went to the Windows website and looked for the problem and found it. It said to download and install the stand-alone version, so I did that but still would not configure on the restart....says the update failed to install. Funny how this comes up within a few days of Windows 7 coming out. Do you suppose Microsoft is trying to tell me I need to update? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Turning off the firewall isn't the same as turning off the antivirus software.

John,

does that mean that you're now ok with your ability to install SP2 on your 'puter?
