The Passing of a true American Hero

My uncle EARL KALEO CHUNG passed away Wednesday Oct. 21. He was a SeaBee, and a Sergeant 1st class Marine Corps. during the Viet Nam War. He was a Bronze Medal recipient and Purple Heart with cluster, among many other awards and citations. I remember visiting him in Tripler Army Hospital the 3 times he was blown up by shrapnel. After the 3rd time the Marine Corp refused to let him return to Nam. The times I visited him, he was always anxious to return to Viet Nam, to protect his boys. One of his exploits was to blaze a road through the jungle with his D9 Cat, so that they could rescue a platoon of Marines trapped by the Cong. He received the Bronze Medal by protecting his construction convoy by taking out a large Cong contingent who ambushed his convoy. He took out the Cong with his D9 Cat. This is all interesting because a SeaBee is a non combatant. All his war wounds finally caught up to him. Rest in peace my brave and loving uncle.

Thank you for this post.

What is it that makes such men? Men of such honor, loyalty and courage. Just to look around and compare our fighting men with some of the detritus found in our schools and unfortunately even our congress. We can just thank God for them and pray they keep coming.

Take comfort in the last phrase of the last stanza of the Marine Corps Hymn:

Here's health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.

Obviously "Marine Barracks, Heaven" now has a new First Sergeant reporting for duty.

The tears have been flowing like a river to know how my uncle is loved by so many people that love and respect the individual men and women who fight for or freedom and to keep our country free.May the ultimate sacrifices of all these brave men and women be recognized by our leaders, and inspire them to be brave and selfless in this age of greed and aggrandizement.
