Taking a trip to Jamaica

Hi,
I have made reservation for a trip to Jamaica with my son in December. We will land @ Montego Bay airport and then shuttle to Ochio Rios. We are staying at the hotel Riu for 6 nights and it is all inclusive. I do not travel much and I have never been to an all inclusive hotel.Any one out there have any advice for me? / has anyone out there been to Jamaica before?
Thanks,
Linda

Yes, I have. Be sure to take the river ride. I thought it would be too hot for me (I'm a whimp in the humidity) but the rivers are lined with overhanging trees so it is delightful. Also, on the one I went on, the native that poled us down the river carved an animal out of a gourd for our souvenir.

The shops in town are great places to buy jewelry and collectibles at very cheap prices. So if you don't stay at your hotel, go to town in groups if possible. Drugs, poverty and crime are problems in this beautiful island just as elsewhere. I did not stay at an all-inclusive resort - my visit was by cruise ship - but you will get the most for your money if you stay at the hotel. Everything you will need will be there and you've already paid for it anyway.

Have fun, Linda!

Have a great time. I do have some friends of friends who went recently to an all inclusive and had their room broken into. Just leave all your jewelry and stuff you really care about at home. I was there in the 60's, imagine it has changed, but the weather and the flora can't be beat except maybe Hawaii. Have fun, Mon!

Hubby & I went to Ocho Rios a few years ago, but stayed in a different hotel. The Riu is 2 or 3 miles outside of town, so if you want to explore the area you'll probably have to take a resort-sponsored tour or shuttle, or use a taxi. One enjoyable thing we did was hire a young man to drive us around sightseeing. His name is Trevor, and he runs a jewelry stand at the Craft Market in Ocho Rios. He made a good first impression on us, and we lucked out. Many, many people along the street will offer to drive you someplace, but I was advised by one native (later in the week), "Don't go nowhere with nobody!" I guess there are instances of tourists being mugged or robbed. Maybe we didn't look like we had much money. If you want a different dining experience some evening, the "Ruins at the Falls" restaurant is very good--you sit outside by a waterfall. And, they will send a car or van to pick you up--just call. If you elect to hire a taxi, official government-licensed taxis have a red license plate.
The weather and flowers are reminiscent of Hawaii--just not as neat and clean. But it was still an enjoyable week.

I visited Ocho Rios during a cruise with two of my grandsons. The 600 foot high falls were too steep and rocky for me but they loved it! The people there were very friendly but it seemed like ALL of them had something to sell. Course, we were in the area where the cruise tourists congregate.

Enjoy your trip. The best part about all inclusive is you're not always reaching for your wallet or wondering about the cost of everything. Have fun!
