Denny,
I work at a healthcare facilty and my heart goes out to you because I know exactly what you are talking about and yes this is not right. There is no excuse for the madness that passes for insurance coverage in this country where people only have value when they are used as a commodity, but God forbid they should need any help.
Let's get true health care reform passed for your dear Suzy and all the others like her who need someone in their corner.

My deepest condolences Denny. I know what you're talking about. I'm dealing with cancer myself. Although I have pretty good insurance, I've had the misfortune of running into doctors either while in the operating room or the emergency room that don't take ANY insurance. Sure, they'll take what the insurance pays, then send me a bill for the rest! So far I'm in debt for over $70,000 on account of 5 doctors that I had no choice in picking! Greedy leaches! The Hippocratic oath?

As an RN and stroke survivor I understand your frustration. These and many I have encountered both professionaly and personally are why we need to pass health reform yesterday and not wait any longer. My prayers and best wishes go out to you both
When Suzy was dying, I promised her that I would be unrelenting in making people aware of the greedy and opportunistic policies of the American health insurance companies and drug manufacturers. In her last days, it was very difficult for her to speak to visitors. She said to me, "You speak for me". I will always speak for her.

To quote a senator out of context, I have to wonder exactly "what planet" the opponents to healthcare reform live on? Maybe I was using the right context. Many of them will wake up to reality one of these days when a major illness strikes someone in their family, and even though they have "good" insurance and a good job, they don't have that 20-30% of the cost of treatment to pay up front, and find out the hard way they will not get treatment. Its not like the old days when you could pay out the deductible after treatment. I think many of the opponents have the idea set in their minds that healthcare reform is just about providing healthcare to those that "won't work" and think people like you and I are lying about what is happening to people like us, that have insurance. The cost of healthcare is bankrupting this country, and making a small percentage of our population wealthy, and half of our population just doesn't get it. To top it all off, the hospitals have gotten so lacksadaisical(sp) about doing their job that you stand a significant risk of getting a life threatening infection if you have any kind of invasive treatment there. Unlike many of the opponents, I believe even poor people should have access to healthcare.
Very well stated, fireguy. I agree with all the comments above.
Thanks for telling your story, Denny. It's insane that people have to battle insurance companies in addition to navigating the scary medical system when ill.
I think many in your situation don't know how to read insurance fine print as well as you do — especially if alone and sick. Too many lose everything and end up with family gone and disastrous medical bills.
To me, health care for profit is obscene. Somebody makes money off cancer treatment and dying children! Why isn't that incomprehensible to everyone who believes in humane treatment?
Hospitals are one place you want kind, intelligent perfectionists and compulsive cleanliness. But as fire said, "you stand a significant risk of getting a life threatening infection if you have any kind of invasive treatment . . . ."
Places that need to be sterile often expose patients with compromised immune systems to bacteria and viruses they can't fight. I believe most medical errors are with medications — and are often the result of sloppiness.
The way I look at it, if you're making minimum wage at McDonald's and you mix up salt and sugar because they "look the same" — you're fired. Yet two infants can be injected with 1,000 X too much blood thinner and the excuse was the labels "look the same."
