Long Time Away
I've been out of the loop for some time. I joined because of my father who passed near Christmas last year. I still have one parent at home.
The reason I am posting now is because of my new job - Well I started a year ago, but it still feels fresh and it is for an agency and service a lot of folks don't know about: Hospice.
I am fortunate to work for an agency that also provides home health and home care before a person needs to go on hospice. The one thing I like about it, is when hospice comes in, the spouse and kids (even if they are adults) can be more like family and not feel so isolated for 24/7 care. Some of our folks have been on the program for more than 2 years. Hospice for many has been seen as a death sentence, but many of our clients have to be discharged because they get better with all the in home care and attention.
Many of our patients suffer from some form of dementia, COPD, heart, as well as cancer and other dibilitating illnesses. It's just a thought and possibility to help relieve some of the stress.
Our agency offers volunteer services for respite or other needs, a skilled nurse at least once a week, social worker to help with the issues of living (financial, caregiver, equipment, placement, etc) and dying (help arrange services or share choices), a bath aide and a chaplain (that's me!)
Blessings to you all.
