Does Anyone Know Barack Obama?

by Richard Cohen

The upcoming HBO documentary "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama," which is the product of many months of behind-the-scenes access to Obama during the presidential campaign. It reveals -- you will be surprised to learn -- that Barack Obama is pretty close to the most perfect person you will never get to know.
----------
If Obama ends the deepest recession since the Great Depression, if he enacts health care reform, if he succeeds in Afghanistan, then his presidency will have been remarkable, maybe even great -- the triumph of intellect. The man will be his own movement.

But if he fails in all or most of that, it will be because it is not enough to be the smartest person in the room. Warmth and commitment matter, too -- a driving sense of conviction, the fulsome embrace of causes and not just issues. That is not something Obama has yet shown. See the movie.
--------------
Sometimes "real life" does not lend itself to the "movie" structure. And sometimes the "movie" does not reflect "real life."

I went to visit my friends who happen to live in the same neighborhood as Obama. And they once met him as a neighbor before he became famous. I wanted to visit his house, but that entire block is now guarded by security and we couldn't get within a photo shoot of his house. (Ah, the price of fame!)
-------------
I am amazed that we have so little "real life" impressions of the man. The right vilifies him and accuses the left of "worshipping" him. I wonder if we can ever get an image of him as just a neighbor.

I've met Obama, TJ, and he came across to me as far less arrogant than you do.

"..... buy a bridge?"

Is that "bridge to nowhere" still for sale? I thought the lady just took the money and ran. No more bridge, No more money. No more governor.

Or are you talking about that bridge from Manhattan to Brooklyn? I understand that bridge is NOT FOR SALE!

I'm interested in seeing this... I decided to cast my vote for Obama late in the game- and part of the reason was I just kept wondering if he was 'for real'-- well, as 'real' as any candidate can be in the media saturated election process. I've been pretty pleased so far-- with some notable exceptions.

His Presidency is turning out to be almost as interesting as the election...

I find those who seem to take some kind of masochistic pleasure in vilifying the man as interesting as anything else. Hell, I didnt like Bush but I had a pretty good reason (like invading the wrong country) but I didnt cast him as friggin' Satan.

My dad knew him well enough to predict that he would be president one day. My dad did not live to see his prediction come true. He missed it by one year and 11 months.

"I am amazed that we have so little "real life" impressions of the man. "

I'll sure 2nd that.

But even this thread demonstrates why it's so hard to get any straight forward information about the man. He is a very polarizing figure.

His politics make him a man very easy to dislike. But his style and communication techniques predispose one like him; to think there's hope, and to engage. We saw how America fell in love with Reagans projection of candor, and the same thing, methinks, is happening with BHO today.

But the curious combination of qualities we know about the man really makes me wonder about the real guy.

I do not see any inconsistancies in BHO's behavior and politics. I am really confused by your question. I wonder if you are questioning because President Obama does not fit your stereotype of a black man.
