Dressing to look like Saints

In my school we didn't acknowledge halloween, we celebrated All Saints' Day. We secretly picked a holy card and then dressed like the Saint we picked. I remember dressing like Saint Rita one year and I thought I was cool with lipstick on my forehead. It was made to look like blood from the thorn she carried. Any one else do this in their school?

We did not at our grade school in Indianapolis. Saint James the Greater. However, my children did at Sacred Heart parish in Terre Haute, Indiana. Here is a picture of them at the All Saints Day Mass. One daughter was Mary, the other was Mother Theodore Guerrin (one of our newest saints)

How precious are they! They were real sweeties! My boys dressed as Saint Thomas and Saint Nick. Saint Nick handed out the candy the the bazaar.

Precious kids! Our kids did this at our little school, too, and it became a traditional part of our school Mass on All Saints' Day every year. The kids learned so much about their saints at that time; for a while, we had a program in the gym where they presented their saints and info about their lives; later, we added that to our school Mass. Everyone loved seeing the kids all dressed up as their favorite saint. A really nice tradition that has fallen by the way-side unfortunately.

So many traditions have fallen by the wayside. Our generation is the keeper of the traditions. If we don't pass them onto our grandchildren they will be lost forever.
