To the Fort!

The weather promised a good weekend so I planned a door to door trip down to Ft. Collins. Meet up at my #2 son Kyle's house (he is a junior at Colorado State) take him to dinner, spend the night and then ride back home Sunday.

I had to work Saturday AM so the day started with a chilly, frosty ride into the lumberyard at 7AM with the temp at 19 deg.

Sunrise over the valley.

Elk on the golf course. (Of course!)

These two boys were squaring it off while this other guy was rushing to get in on the action! You might notice there are no ladies around...these are all the "losers". The real big boys and their harems are not to be found around this group!

Photobucket

Closed up the yard at noon and headed out of town via the Lake Estes trail.

Photobucket

See ya tommorow Estes!

Photobucket

Heading down US-34, Big Thompson Canyon.

Photobucket

There was a couple of guys in the river in kayaks. They pulled into that eddy just as I was taking their pic.

Photobucket

At the bottom of the canyon you travel through the Narrows.

I popped out of the canyon and climbed up a hill where you get a fine view of the "hogback", a geologic feature that runs up and down the front range.

A nice quiet place for a break next to a busy hiway.

Photobucket

Out in the farmland between Loveland and Ft. Collins. You can see where I came from, Longs and Meeker.

Photobucket

After a side trip to REI, my daughter took this picture of me arriving at Kyle's house.

Photobucket

Kyle and yours truly.

Photobucket

And with my daughter Evelyn!

After a nice breakfast Sunday morning I headed back for home. South to Loveland and then turn back west on US-34 into a real strong headwind....bummer....
Here a place for a really BIG guy to take a break next to the lake in Loveland and get a guitar lesson.

Photobucket

This is called the "Devil's Backbone". All the real bad a*s rattlesnakes live here.

Photobucket

Heading back towards the Narrows, hopefully to get out of the wind.

Photobucket

Back into the canyon but no let up on the wind.

Photobucket

Last of the fall colors.

This is the memorial that was built to honor two police officers that gave their lives while trying to notify people of the on-coming Big Thompson flood in 1976. You can still see scars on the mountainside where the height of floodwaters hit.

A fun weekend to be out on the bike, the wind was a bummer for the trip home. Really took it out of me, the constant uphill with gust and wind in the face. I need to learn to listen to my body a little closer when it comes to keep eating and fueled while I ride. The new bike performed beautifully and it was fun to hang out with Kyle. 92 miles round trip adding on a bit with some running around Ft. Collins. I averaged 16.5 mph going down and 7.2 going up.

Hopefully the weather holds so I can get some more rides in before true winter begins.

Everybody have a great week!

What a great story Jim! Thank you for sharing your ride. Gosh you ride in some beautiful country. Your photographs are wonderful. They make me feel like I'm right there on the ride with you. (Well, almost as I don't have to deal with the wind on this one....lol.) Your bike looks strong and capable of withstanding some of the extreme weather conditions that you must bike through in your part of the country. 19 degrees seems a bit too cold to ride in. How do you dress to stay warm in those low temperatures? I really liked the big chair. Seems like the perfect place to relax and wiggle your toes. I liked the photographs of your kids as well. You look like an older brother standing next to your son. However, your lovely daughter upstages you.

Averaging 7.2 mph on the uphills is not bad at all! BTW, what is the elevation where you ride?

Tl, I live at 7800 ft here in Estes, entrance to the park is about 8000 ft going up to 11,000 ft at the top of trail ridge. Ft. Collins, Loveland, Longmont, Denver, etc. all about 5200 ft.
Yeah...19 deg is cold on a bike, you know you just keep putting on layers until you feel warm. Hard to keep your hands warm. My ride in is only about ten minutes, much more than that and the fun would be over with frozen fingers. LOL!

Great pics! Had to laugh at the chair. There is a rock chair outside Moab, Utah at a place called Hole in the Rock, or something along those lines. Outside Durango is a home that decorates their front yard with five of the old wooden lawn chairs, changing them with the seasons and holidays. Its a hoot. What people don't think of! Gosh, I get up over about 6500 feet and some one up ahead of me sucks up all my air! Love the change of country side you get to ride through.

I really enjoyed the story and what great pix! With that bike next to the bench, I would have guessed your height at about 3' 2"! Sure glad you included other pix! Here in central Illinois, elevation 640 ft and sometimes soaring to 695 ft in my area, my lungs do just fine! Our family has a cabin just west of Cody, WY, and we're about 6,000 feet there. When I ride there, I feel as if I've aged 20 years after about 10 minutes on my bike! Boy, I wish I could ride down hill there and down hill back!

Absolutely beautiful trip Jim! Love the story, the clear photos and pix of you and Kyle and Evelyn. You documented it so well, I feel like I have been on a little journey. 92 miles is quite an accomplishment, way to go. I really miss the Fort now.

Wow...quite a ride Jim...92 miles is a great ride, especially with the temperature extremes and the altitude that would have me gasping. It's always nice to be able to have a destination with special people waiting for you. Not to mention a bit of a break before having to struggle your way beack up the hill that was so easy going down. Great photos, loved the scenery. I just came through Ft. Collins on Saturday morning on my way to Odessa, Tx. The mountains were very pretty with their new snow.
