upsidedown5822,
You have credentials to prove your profession? You don't sound or write like any kind of
professional.
I don't like the ads. But I like even less the charlatan "doctors" that show up in the midst of it all. I'M a doctor! but not a physician. Big difference.
bg,
Sorry to say that conditions dictate that you are correct.
As was told to me as much as possible ; dont just start popping pills . Each one has reactions of some sort they cure but have side effect that are even stated ever so fast in the commericals . I dont see why if your just having a ruff day ya need to pop a pill . But I am sure there are those who do need them . So for them I am glad they are available .
Upsidedown5822,
I agree with you. Anyone either in the medical field, or exposed to patient care in any respect, I think, would also agree with you. Even in the 21st century, it seems that doctors are still of the mind that repressing the symptoms cures the problem.

Not all medical professionals talk, sound, or write like "Ben Casey" or Dr. Kildare.
Apparently, you haven't been around many "professionals". One of my m/c riding buddies, who calls himself "Cutter", has been a thoracic surgeon for 20 years. Professionals are like everyone else. Until they're at work, and then they're professional.

I get frustrated when I hear once again about "anti-depressants" being "happy pills", continuing the uninformed myths about mental illness. Depression is a real brain-chemical condition that isn't related to "having a bad day". It devastates many lives and prevents good people from reaching their potential. Anti-depressants have saved millions of lives, including mine. Anyone who has made the effort to inform themselves would know that there is no immediate "up" or "high" when someone takes an single pill. The medication works over a long period of time to help regulate the brain chemicals so that one can gradually and subtlely improve life-function at a close to normal level. It doesn't act as a buffer from life's inconveniences, either large or small, and cannot be related to the mood-altering drugs so popular on the street. I believe the "don't worry! be happy!" saying applies more to managing ones own attitude. It implies a trust in a higher power who has given us extraordinary gifts and will always love and take care of us.
omg, I love the new one, if you have to pee a lot take this...and then comes the side effects, the choice of headache, falling asleep, dry mouth etc. " If you experience these this might not be right for you." Really? duh
Goodquestion says,

All emotions are a brain-chemical condition. When you laugh, your brain changes it's chemistry. When you watch a TV show, your brain changes it's chemistry. It's a two way street. Chemicals change the brain, and the brain is capable of consciously changing the chemicals.
But we're not talking about Clinical Depression here. We're talking about Pharmacies who make a fortune by selling pills so that people can feel better about feeling worse.

"DON'T WORRY! BE HAPPY!!"
I can safely say that not worrying helps live longer. My father, who is 93 now, will turn 94 jan 30, 2010, never worried about much when he was younger. He is the longest lived in his family, and he smoked until he was 67, more than a pack a day, and was not careful about eating, and possibly drinking, when he go out with his buddies. He outlived all his 3 younger sisters. I never expected him to live beyond 70-75, but I believe the thick skin, plus his love of walking and swimming until he was 80ish, helped.
And the funny thing is, it is my 81-yr old mother who has the super-genes in the family, her grandmother died at 105, her father and his sister in their late 90s, and many others died very old.
Re the pharmacists and the Rxs, it is a US thing, in Europe they treat depression mostly by counseling, but in the US many MDs are very happy to perscribe a ton of pills instead, it seems. I take no medicine whatsoever, except an aspirin preventively when I remember it, and I will not take one unless it is absolutely necessary and there is no alternative treatment such as diet or exercise related. And I sure will never take any chemical for any kind of depression or related problem!!!
I'm not even better off tonight than I was this morning because this morning I was driving a car with no major damage, but this evening coming back from a card party, and driving in heavy fog (only going about 25 to 30) I hit a deer.
