Some of us are experiencing snow; others the first hint of coolness after a sweltering September. So: How do extreme temperatures effect you? What is worse for you winter or summer? Do you have any special coping techniques for getting through the winter months?
Badly. Cold damp weather is the worst on me. Don't tolerate heat as well as I use to either. The 100+ temps we had in TX this spring and summer just about did me in. Anything below 60' gives me a chill. Never use to be that t way before. Not sure how much has to do with Fibro and how much with age. LOL
I do my best between 70' and 85'F. That is not counting any other factors.
I find it easier in winter, as the heat really makes me ill. However, that said, it is weather changes that get me the most. Whenever the weather goes from cold to hot, hot to cold, rainy to clear, clear to rainy, I suffer. Luckily, I live in Los Angeles, and the weather doesn't go through a lot of changes here. You know, sunny California.
That's it Pris, rub it in there girlfriend! LOL Just kidding! This fall, I guess one would call it, has been the worst. Went from 60's to 40's highs over night! Low of 29* light snow this morning. The sudden changes do me in. Makes my whole body ache like a toothache. Washed up the winter blankets and put my flannel sheets and electric blanket on the bed. That helps me, even if I just warm it up to get into bed, then shut it off. I love hot tea with a teaspoon of OJ and honey in it. It is like I crave it, in the winter months. Also!! use my Full Spectrum light to help me beat the SAD I get every winter. In Oct. I always start an antidepressant to ward off the winter blues. This I have been doing for years now. Learning to cope is an ongoing thing for me. Good thing I have lots of winter under woollies, warm blankets, coveralls I wear outside.
I don't know which one is worse these days? I like Spring and Autumn. but somehow Mother Nature has gotten all mixed up, goes from winter to summer around here in Ohio...
The first week of spring is good. Then it gets hot. I rub ice cubes or a cold can of soda over my pulse points and carry the plastic lid off a bucket of ice cream around to fan with. (Sinuses, lungs and bones won't allow me to use a real fan.) I carry a 64 oz. plastic cup full of iced water or diet mt. dew everywhere I go. Everywhere. (Hey, now that I think of it, I'm going to start carrying a zip-lock bag to put ice in for those hard to reach places!) My van has no AC (I need to get that fixed!) And the windows won't roll down. Well, one will roll down, but then it won't roll back up until after a bad rainstorm. The first week of autumn is nice. Then it gets cold. I wear a knit hat everywhere including to bed. Especially to bed! I keep a blanket in the van.(No heat either except when it's 90 outside, at which time the heat works fine.) I use fleece sheets on the bed. I turn the heat off at night and keep an electric heater by the bed to turn on before I get up. I'm seriously going to get an electric blanket this year! When I get the bone deep pain, I fill the plastic bin I got from Walmart with hot water and soak in it. It takes the pain away every time. (No bathtub either. I'm about to move though, because, although I can live without a bath tub, I can't live with the roaches the neighbors brought.) The exterminater has been here twice, but the roaches hide until the poison dies down then they come right back. I figure that's Gods' way of letting me know He's found a house with a tub and I need to get packing! Can't wait to get settled in the new place! Lol!
I prefer hot to cold. If it is too hot, I go in the pool or into the AC. When it is cold, I just cannot seem to warm up, especially my feet and hands. Just coming from Mom's in upstate NY, I was freezing. The heat (forced hot air) also dried out my sinuses and throat. Chapped lips. Dry skin. Then I got home to a low of 48 this morning in Tampa. Grrrrrrrrr! I am best between 70-85. I am most happy here in Florida, where it is now HOME to me. Granted the foliage was pretty in NY but I was too cold to enjoy it except thru a window.
Whenever the weather is changing it bothers me, and my sinuses, joints, head and muscles will ache like crazy. When it is really cold (think below 48, now that I live in NC), I bundle up really well. However, I get hot really easy and perspire, so I have to wear light clothes under layers. When I am in NY to visit family in fall or winter I really suffer! This year we went up the week ending with July 4th, so that was not too bad. In summer when it is hot, the sun hurts my skin but I stay inside a lot and go to the pool a lot. So summer is easier to tolerate for me. I have a parraffin bath to dunk my hands into when they hurt, and that helps. I also keep flannel sheets on the bed, but hope hubby doesn't find the electric blanket, 'cause he jacks it up all the way and I feel like I'm going to die from the heat! And this is a dual control blanket, but the heat comes over and attacks me anyway. I keep telling him it's not healthy, but he says, "It helps the pain." He's talking about his back, shoulders and leg. So we both try to be understanding. :-)
Has anyone else ever experienced this? My body will be radiating heat on the inside and frozen on the outside. I haven't found a way to deal with this yet.
Yes I have experienced that..........in fact was how I first suspected something was wrong. No I haven't found a way to deal yet. If you do let me know. Actually I can relate to everyone that has posted about reactions to weather and I live in Missouri so weather is always changing, but cannot move to different climate cause my granddaughter would miss her meme. Not that meme wouldn't miss her first. lol.
I hate cold! Heat makes me feel blah but i get into our backyard pool or crank up the airconditioner. But once I am cold I can't get warm! And then everyhting hurts from my teeth to my toenails. We went from high 60's to mid 20's overnight and I've felt crappy every since. But we're suppose to hit high 60's again this week so hoping to feel better. I hate the weather in Ohio!
I do better in the summer. Can go out and work in the garden until about 12 noon. Then back into the air conditioner. I fight the air conditioner all the time. Once it gets to cold, I have to turn it down. I notice the low barometric pressure coming before it hits. Achy body, arthritis, etc. acts up. I too wear layered clothing, especially in spring and fall. One min. it feels hot, then cooler.
