Our class was small, so our celebration was in a small Chapel down the road from our home. It was a really beautiful mass although one of the girls' veils caught fire from the candle behind her. It wasn't bad, it was put out quickly. The sisters were always alert to things such as those.
My parents made a dinner party for me, my godfather brought a friend and they played their guitars for me. My godmother brought me a statue of the Child Jesus and we sang Holy God we praise Thy Name.
I still have my little prayer book that I carried that day. My veil had a crown the shape of a heart, I wish my girls could have used it, but my mom gave it away.

I don't remember the day itself so much as what led up to it - my mother picking me up early at school (I went to public school until 3rd grade, and I'm of the age that First Communion happened in 2nd grade) for Weds. afternoon classes, bringing me a snack of animal crackers and milk in a jar - not being allowed to play at recess for the last two weeks before the day, because my mother didn't want me to have scabbed knees in my First Communion photos - wearing my grandmother's hairnet to bed the night before to save my hairdo - no wonder I don't remember the day.
We boys wore white suits with short pants and knee socks, even white shoes. The girls wore white frilly dresses and veils. All the veils were the same purchased through the school.
All of us received first Holy Communion "sets", boys' in black leatherette, girls' in white. The set included a small basic missal, rosary beads, a scapular, a miraculous medal and I think another medal, I can't remember which one.
My grandparents from New Jersey came to celebrate.
Having fasted from mid-night, including no water, the Host stuck to the roof of my mouth for a few minutes until I was able to make some saliva come and dislodge it. I knew I could not put my finger into my mouth. At that time, touching the Body and Blood of Christ was not allowed.

May 1, 1960 at 7:30 Mass at SS Peter & Paul Catholic church in Kiel, WI. I remember it mostly because as I was walking up from the Church Basement with my Class I saw My Godfather and his Family at the back of church. I knew they had to get up extra early to drive quite a distance to get there on time. It just made my day. Weird the prospective one has at age 7.
I remember my pretty white dress and veil. But more than that, I remember feeling the holy presence of Jesus and how sacred and beautiful it was to receive the Body of Jesus. I laugh now because I was so afraid I might accidentally "bite" Jesus if the host touched my little teeth! (:-) Now at 62 years of age, I meditate in His Word and receive Holy Communion every morning, knowing how much I need His strength, healing and presence in my daily life. I believe it all started at my First Holy Communion.
I still have a picture of the whole class. There were about 15 of us. I still have my rosary. I remember being relieved when I found out I could chew the host as an adult. I was afraid to bite Our Good Lord, also. I wore a white dress and veil like above and the boys wore white shirts and dark pants.
