cat pees the bed

I have a dumb question: my cat Kali is a young tom and he has started marking everywhere. If I get him neutered, will this stop or is there some other action I need to take. Is there a way to stop it without getting him neutered? I love my kitty, but since he likes to sleep with me, that marking is a real problem.

Neutering should stop the spraying or marking but it doesn't always. I had a neutered cat and he marked or sprayed every where. I ended up having to find a different home for him because he peed on my husbands pants and my husband threatened to kill the cat. It broke my heart to have to give him up.

If the spraying is on wood, then you must get that smell out. This can be a very hard problem to solve. I had to rip up all of my carpet and padding. I then had to use a solution of diluted Clorox on the wood flooring. Then some Munch Away. I had to do this twice on hard wood floors before I put down new padding and carpet. If you kitty is spraying just on your carpet there is a solution of: equal parts of vinegar and water. Let that set for three minutes then get as much of the water and vinegar out of the carpet or furniture as you can. Then mix up 1/4 cup peroxide with 1 Tablespoon baking soda, 3/4 cup water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid, (test on small area to see if it bleaches out the color of material) work down into carpet or material with your fingers or small brush. Let dry then vacuum. Or if you don't want to try that get a professional cleaner for carpets and furniture to come in and clean.

You might also want to take your kitty to the vet to be check for an urinary tract infection. Some cats will spray or mark when they have an infection.

Sorry to ramble on, but hopefully this will help with some decision making on how to solve your problems.

I think I got him to slow down or at least get more careful about it. In case it was a uti I gave him just a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar in a dropper. He didn't like it much--fake puked, then avoided me for hours after that. Then I got to thinking--we just moved and went from 3 boxes to one. So I got another box and that seems to have helped a little. I have 3 cats, small apartment, and he tries to nurse on me all the time. I don't know what I am going to do if he ever actually latches onto that nipple he keeps trying to get. So the way I see it, he's trying to hog Mama for himself and that is some of his problem. And of course the girl cat who is mine now too, I think. Gonna get him neutered so he'll live longer, but got him slowed down for now. He doesn't really act like he has a uti, but I have started him eating more wet food and things like meat and chicken livers and that seems to make him happier. I'm not giving him up; he is a darling cat and the prettiest big gray tabby I ever saw; guess if he doesn't stop we'll just have to smell like cat pee. He's really a big softie, don't know why he is afraid to go outdoors, but he got out for just a little the other day and has been better since, so I wonder if most of it isn't just psychological--he freaks out when my big cat Krishna is in and he is out even if I am holding him, but he saw Krishna go outdoors without any problems the other day and seems to think he can too if I am there and the other cats are there. Strange little cat--he came from a batch my daughter's stray cat had, but he's really lovable and talkative.

Neutering may or may not stop him.
I once had a sweet little boy that I had neutered and he still sprayed and marked at times. It's difficult to tell. Some males are more territorial.
He may be marking scents that he feels he needs to cover with his own scent. Is he the only one? Maybe he's feeling insecure or threatened.
When I had my sweet little boy he was living in a household that was always under turmoil.. that was with my ex husband around. I really feel that had something to do with his marking.
I know there are ways to counter this and deal with the situation. Have you ever talked with someone who deals with behavior problems with cats? He's letting everyone know this is his territory.
He may be letting everyone.. whoever that may be.. know that you are his and this is your and his territory.
I would make a few calls or go online to Bing or one of the search sites and find professionals who can help you find a way to clear this problem up.
Good luck.

The sooner you have him neutered, the better. If marking gets to be an ingrained habit, the more likely he might continue after being neutered.
As a tom, it could be territorial. After neutering, it could just be habit.
However, I had a cat that was marking, and just assumed it was my neutered male. Turns out it was his neutered SISTER making the marks, and the vet thought it was because she saw other cats outside the window, and was marking her territory!
Good luck!
