Shelf Life of Members

I recently took on a number of abandoned groups, and went through the culling process eliminating out of hand all those who had not visited the group(s) in 2 years. I did some random spot checking on those profiles and found that every profile I checked the person 'had no recent Eons activity'.

I am now wandering through profiles of those who have not visited the group(s) in 8 months to 1 year (Eons doesn't seem to have any gradations between last visited 1 year and 2 years ago.) and I am finding that an extremely large percentage of even those profiles show the 'no recent activity' message.

So I started wondering just how long the majority of people who join Eons stay and remain even minimally active. Just curious.

A piece of trivia for you. The profile that has a photo or specifically chosen avatar is much more likely to be a member still currently active in some capacity you get than one which has the Eons-assigned avatar when you first join the site.

I have been here since April 24, 2007 and am sure that I have never been listed as "no recent activity". It's like any place, people may join and realize it is not their cup of tea.

I would be interested in knowing the total numbers: 2009 vs. 2007. I have been curious, too, for some of the people who were on here a few years ago have dropped off -- some immediately after eons changed its policy and opened the site to all age groups. I guess unless one is told in advance the reason why a person is leaving, they are left to guess.

It does seem as though the site is less active than it was a few years ago, so I have wondered about the size of the membership.

I still firmly believe that when they make this site simple and easy to navigate (and accurate) - that more people will stay - and they seem actively driven to make that happen right now.

Having said that, there will always be huge numbers that arrive then disappear.

I wonder if it seems less active because there are soooooo many more groups now. Way more groups than two years ago. So the active members are all divvied up among a lot more groups. Just guessing.

I think that if they aren't satisfied with what they find here, they should un-join, rather than just stay away..

There are a LOT of groups. Once in awhile I'll pick a subject and it will show maybe 5-6 groups in that particular subject and then it will go on to groups that have nothing to do with what I'm looking for or I'll take a look and see group titles with no names, no members...no nothing or there will just be the person who wanted to start the group and nothing. There must be an eaiser way to show the groups or have a time limit - say 30 days (or less) with no activity and delete.

I counted the members about a year or two ago. There were over 1,300,000! Probably a million of those were inactive. Eons revenue is proportional to their membership, so I doubt if they will ever "clean house"! Oh, and I'm not counting again!

How were you able to count, Loko? That is fascinating. And I bet way more than a million are inactive.

So maybe managers & moderators should try to make sure new members aren't left on the shelf? How do you get all members to join in, at least one of, the group's activities rather than just leaving them to be a lurker as lurking is not considered a social activity?

You can only do the best you can, MrTSauce. In the M&M group there are all kinds of suggestions on boosting participation as well as increasing numbers; that reflects your query as being a common one.

The bottom line is members can't be forced to participate. People join & leave groups & this site for all kinds of reasons.
