Here's a link to webopedia's definition of what "ADSL" is...
view linkYou physically need to be close to your telephone company. That may not be an option for your friend.
And I agree with staying away from AOL as a connection source.....once it's "in" it seems it take a awful lot of work to get it "out".

what i did was go with road runner. they have a "lite" version. it is a little faster than dial up and only cost 19 a month. might want to check with your cable providers in your area to see if they have
anything like that.
i do not have cable tv, just have the internet, use a cell phone.
It's been several years since I used dial-up. I've used PeoplePC and it is as hard to get rid of as AOL Both become imbedded within your system. NetZero used to offer free service for 10 hours. Drawbacks are you have to deal with spam banner at the top of your screen. Secondly NetZero is not available in many places. A coupe of things you might try. If you can get access to the internet, just Google for 'dial-up internet access'. Their websites will query for your location and advise you if they have a viable local phone number and their fees. The difficulty in setting up a dial-up is getting the software. You can down load the software and move it to a flash drive or order a CD via mail. Also generally you can find out who your local ISPs are and get free setup disks from your local computer store.
Thanks. I'll pass all this on to her and let her decide what she wants to do.
I have netzero and I like it. 9.95 a month. It is a dial up and I use it a lot. Try it,from another old lady Purplepie
I've used PPC for yrs and been quite happy. Unlimited. I use FireFox and take advantage of a few Add-ons to improve my online 'experience.' (No spam, popups, flash, etc.) I rarely need to see graphics, etc.
I'm usually on my old laptop...which I am now via PPC....and it has Wifi. PPC, with graphics off, is not all that much slower than the Wifi with them on.
If your acq has the most minimal of needs you're really not wanting any bells or whistles. Easy access, toll free numbers are obviously crucial. If someone sets up her sys and makes any necessary tweaks to get online, even the most basic service should be do-able. If the user, however, finds an ISP makes the online experience complicated, or frustrating, then it's not a good deal.
BTW, should've mentioned that I DO do banking, online purchasing, view images (via right-click), DL vids, browse my local library's catalog, etc with PPC. Not much I feel I'm not able to do that others with faster connections do. Just requires patience.
I've used cheapdialup for about 3 yrs now and for what i do it works great.
Price is $8.95 a month or $24.00 for 3 months. (quarterly)
Hope your friend finds the one that works for her. Nobody should have to do without internet because of price these days. Netzero also has a freebie but not much internet time. I have it just for a backup.
