Dial-up providers

I have a friend who doesn't have a lot of money, but really enjoys the computer. I'm wondering which dial-up provider is the best along with being the cheapest. Any ideas? She has mentioned earthlink, peoplespc and AOL. She doesn't use her computer for much more than e-mailing her family. She's a older lady, so she doesn't use it for business, banking, etc. Thanks.

I remember I used peoplepc for awhile...like all dial-ups it is slow but I seem to remember I liked it.

I guess the best answer would be to research each of those mentioned to check on prices and amount of time allowed online. Just a quick glance at Earthlink tells me that for 3 months you get unlimited service for $9.95, but after that three months it goes up to $21.95 [ridiculous for dialup, IMHO].

PeoplePC offers a better price in that it's $5.47 for the first 3 months and $10.95 a month after that, but "** You will need Busy Call Forwarding activated by your phone company on your existing phone line before you will be able to use Internet Waiting - Alert. Your phone company may charge you for this service."

AOL's Basic Dialup is $11.95 per month for unlimited service.

This was just a cursory look on my part. You and your friend might want to take a closer look at each of the services. Of course, it also depends on if the service is available in her area; watch for long distance numbers when trying to choose a number to dial in to - you want to choose a local number because anything other will incrue long distance charges.

It's been, like, forever since I even gave thought to dial-up, but I would think that your friend's search should start with whatever service has a phone number that's NOT a toll call for them. From there, you can then easily and quickly whittle down the options to just a couple.

Good, uhh, "call", Jason! :)

Also read the fine print. "Unlimited service" may not always mean "unlimited connectivity time"..

It pays to be careful....

also check into what speeds they guarantee....i was told by one dialup provider a few years back that they were "only required to provide you with 14k"...which won't even load a browser these days..

110net.com was the cheapest, it was about 7.00 per month...I don't know if she can get it where she lives, but I liked it.

Thanks. I had AOL years ago, but couldn't really remember anything about it either. I guess research into each one s the best idea.

I had peoplepc for quite a while. I had the accelerated at $15 a month, I found it to be comparable to the higher priced dial-ups.
