50 Million Clotheslines Banned in the US

This is such a no brainer. Drying your clothes using sunshine is such an easy way to save money and energy, why is it illegal in so many places? Is it legal for you to hang your clothes outdoors where you live?

You can do something about it. There is a website: view link where you can explore this issue. There will be a movie next year and here is a you tube video about it.

How absurd can laws be? Making it illegal to save money and save energy? All because some superficial people have decided that clotheslines are ugly? Why do prisons use dryers? Why don't they hang clothes out to dry? Ugly can't be the issue there, can it? I think maybe we just have become so accustomed to doing things in a certain way and we just don't think about it.

Is is illegal for you to hang your clothes out to dry where you live?

no and I'm sure glad of that. When I was in Australia, virtually every home had a contraption in the yard called a "Hill's Hoist"

I tried to find them here in this country and they are nowhere to be found. I LOVED it over there because the general consciousness is so much more toward conservation in general. We could learn so much from them
Also, every toilet has dual flush--half flush or full flush to save water, Caroma brand (also invented in Australia) is available here at least

You can get them here! I found one on Amazon.com: view link

They cost almost as much as an electric clothes dryer, but after that initial purchase you would never pay another penny to dry your clothing.

gee, I never saw that amazon one--thanks! Yes, that's pretty darn pricey, but it would be cost effective in the long run~

I am happy to say that Florida has a Right To Dry law. Neighborhood associations cannot stop anyone from having a clothes line. All states should have a similar law.

i think its just silly. i have 36 acres of land here, go ahead and tell me not to hang my clothes out. you cant even find me. but even in the city, (nyc) i had a clothes line, it was attached to another building. and we shared it.

its just soooooooooooooooooo silly.

i would never agree to such a thing. then again, i dont agree with the whole homeowners assoc. thing at all. toooooooo many rules.

This is crazy - making people spend money when it is not necessary. I think in my neighborhood it is a problem to have a clothesline. The Right to Dry law sounds good to me.

I built my own clothes line out of 2 inch pipe. I cut two 3 foot pieces, drilled two holes in each in both side of the middle. Then welded these to the ends (Tops)of two other six foot pipes, Dug two holes and concretted the poles in the ground. Then strung 4 stainless steel wire between the two poles. The air is so dry up here that one load from the washer is almost dry before the second load comes out of the dryer. I leave the clothes pins on the wires and birds come and sit on the wires. So for, not when the clothes are hanging there.
