Obama Peace Prize win has Americans asking why?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The award of the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday to U.S. President Barack Obama had many puzzled Americans scratching their heads.

"It would be wonderful if I could think why he won," said Claire Sprague, 82, a retired English professor as she walked her dog in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. "They wanted to give him an honor I guess but I can't think what for."

Itya Silverio, 33, of Brooklyn, was also surprised. "My first opinion is that he got it because he's black," she said. "What did he do that was so great? He hasn't even finished office yet."

Hmmm. The same people who gave the same award to Jimmy Carter.

" The prize money comes from a foundation that was set in place by Alfred Nobel, the one who made dynamite and I am sure it is invested in such a way as to continue on for years."

But the under the table money for the committee came from somewhere else, like Obama's left over campaign funds..

Maybe it's worth it that every one of the late night shows made fun of Obama getting that prize. I just hope that he doesn't appologize for America again when he goes over there to accept the award.

Though I don't agree with what I believe is a premature award to Obama, I also don't want to denegrade the overall Nobel Peace Prize process. There are other catagories - Science, Medicine, Research, and Physics etc. What's my point - those other catagories are measurable with metrics that are quanitative and hence show substantial progress in a given field awarded.

The award to Obama and some others highlighted here are qualitative - not measurable by numberic metrics...I am more skeptical of this type of award.

World peace is a great idea. But it has occurred to many others besides Obama. And many others have done more toward that goal. GWB's war against terrorists for instance.
