Windstorm

We have a high wind watch tonight, with winds of up to 85 mph along the inlet and at higher elevations overnight. Diminishing winds during the day tomorrow (Friday), then picking up to to a possible 75-95 mph tomorrow night. Anybody care to go hiking with me along the inlet tomorrow morning? Somehow I think that's not going to happen.

Wow! That sounds a little vicious. We call winds like that hurricanes! :-)
Be SAFE.

The wind watch has been changed this morning to a wind warning, whatever that means. Winds have been at 40 to 50 along the inlet, which would change my group's hike plans. 85 mph winds are expected tonight.

Valley, the simplest distinction is that a weather watch indicates possible severe weather, while a warning indicates that severe storms or the conditions that produce severe storms have been observed in nearby areas and will likely reach your location. A watch does not necessarily mean that severe weather is imminent; it indicates that it is possible, and likely, due to existing or predicted atmospheric events or conditions. There are distinct guidelines for determining if a weather watch or a warning should be issued. (Copied this from a website online.)

I remember having some strong winds like that when I lived in Anchorage.

Thanks, SL--I thought is was something like that, but was confused because we got no wind in my neighborhood, which made me think the danger was past. I guess not, because they say it's windy down by the inlet. But then they say 30% chance of rain, and it's raining hard at my house. I still plan on hiking, assuming anybody else shows up. We dress well for the rain.

100 mph winds weren't unusual during the winter in Kodiak at all, and I used to sleep so well with howling winds. I guess it's that safe and snug in bed think. When we get 70mph winds in Oklahoma power lines come down and trees fall over. I always think "that wouldn't happen with the deep-rooted spruces in Alaska!"

Down here, those kind of winds come along with rain as a hurricane. The worst one I've ever experienced had winds of over 130 MPH. Usually, by the time it reaches inland far enough to get to us, it's lost a lot of it's strength. It's really amazing to watch the storms tear through...
