Chemicals?

In my recent post about getting ready for winter and in a reply I mentioned several chemicals. Many of you avid gardeners garden organically. Orchids are so different from other types of plants that sometimes chemicals are necessary. To keep from having to use harsh and hazardous chemicals on your orchids I recommend the following:

1. Buy healthy plants! If an orchid is on a sale table it already has problems and you are exposing your other orchids.
2. Quarantine any newly acquired orchids for a month and observe them for problems before introducing the orchid into your collection.
3. Sterilize your pots before repotting. Soak clay pots in a household bleach solution for 24 hours, rinse well, then allow to dry in the sun for a couple of days. Not necessary for new pots! Plastic pots are so cheap just buy new ones. Sterilizing used ones in bleach causes the plastic to break down more quickly. Not worth the effort in my opinion.
4. Use the appropriate potting mix for your specific orchid. Consider inorganic mixes like lava rock or Aliflor when appropriate.
5. DO NOT OVERWATER!!! This causes the most problems of all!
6. Make sure there is air circulation in your growing area.
7. When removing dead leaves, spent bloom spikes, etc. use sterilized cutting implements. Never cut one orchid then another without sterilizing between cuts. I often use single edged razor blades for cutting.
8. Do not water or mist late in the day.Standing water on plants especially in cool, damp conditions can cause problems.
9. Keep your growing area spotlessly clean.
10. Inspect your orchids every time you water. Minor problems remain minor!

I do recommend that you use Physan-20 anytime you divide and repot an orchid.

Any other suggestions for growing orchids without chemicals are welcome!

Such great tips, If you are brave enough to repot, be sure to sterilize, sterilize, use clean instruments. Most important.... clean area where you are working and repotting from an do not reuse your bark, it can contain germs etc.
Thanks for these time proven facts for your orchids and any blooming flowering plants.
I try not to use chemicals myself, so if anyone knows of an organic item, please share...

You guys are always full of helpful info. I don't think I'll need to do any repotting till next summer. I think the basso....what ever it is will need to be repotted first. It's really grown this summer and it's in a 3" pot. Roots are crawling all over the sides of the little pot and the leaves??? if that's what to call them are at least 2" longer than when it got to me. They have little stickers on the ends, weird.

What I think is a bloom stalk on my healtiest phal is really growing slow. Is that normal? It came out between some leaves and now about 2" long. Sorry guys but it looks like a little penis....yeah. It's got a sort of whitish covering over all but the tip that is green.

Shall I post pictures? heehhee

Your penis plant sounds like it is growing a new spike. LOL They grow pretty slowly but fortunately they grow longer and longer and the blooms last a long time.
The other one is a Brassovolla Nodusa. Leave it in the pot for now and repot next spring. Post when you are repotting and I'll tell you how to do it.

I hope the Brassovolla can stay upright till spring. I'm telling you, it really grew this summer. I had it outside till we had the monsoons and think it really liked it out there. You have one of these don't you Nana? Do yours have a sharp spike on the ends of the leaves? It feels more like a succulant than orchid.

I'm keeping an eye on that penis, it is getting a bit longer but it's really slow growing. Also getting a lot of new roots, think I'm doing something right!!!

Sounds like you are doing a great job. I have about 8 spikes on mine, so this is the time of year they put those out and as soon as they flower, put it in your bedroom, the fragrance will take over... one of the nicest scents these orchids...

I don't see a stalk on the Brasso yet. It's so tiny, in a 3" pot...but it looks like there is a old dried up stalk, like it might have bloomed last year.......so I don't know.
