upset

Some of you know I work a full time job and also have a part time craft business painting buckets and things like that. I do that because I need the money to support my grandkids. I put in a lot of hours and don't charge a lot for my crafts. I sell mostly at work. I had 2 orders for oval buckets with snowmen. I got them done, took them to the two ladies and told them if they needed to wait till payday to pay me then that would be OK. Gave them the buckets Tuesday and come Friday one called in sick and the other now wants to pay this next Monday. I spent about 9 hours painting the 2 buckets and have nothing to show for it. I can understand the one that is sick but the other person was there and just didn't want to pay that day. I feel a little petty, but I really need that money!!!!
If you go to my home page you can see some of my crafts. The 2 snowmwn buckets are the ones I am trying to get paid for.

I checked out your buckets and you are too talented to put up with that kind of "friendship". From now on, get the money before you do the painting. Tell them you have to purchase the buckets!!!! Also, try selling at a local gift shop, take a couple and see if they will display them for you. Tack on their fee to the total price. Worth a try! If you can get enough painted take them to Canton (for those of you who are not from East Texas, Canton is purported to be the biggest flea market in the world).

Your buckets are gorgeous! You could easily sell these on eBay and make money without leaving home. Seriously, you should consider putting them on eBay, each one unique, a one of a kind that I bet your buyers would treasure.

You should tell the woman that you did her bucket in a timely manner, and you expect to be paid in kind! I'm sure she had the money and wanted to see if she could get over on you! If her reason was sincere, she would tell you what it was.

I've done and been around wood working for awhile. When a prospective client wants something there's a principal that's typically used. Which is - I need 25/50% of the cost of the item before I can do it. That way if the buyer has second thought they remind themselves that they actually have a monetary obligation, and a potential loss if they change their mind.

On the other hand I agree with the concept. A person stands up to their committments, regardless of any second thoughts or vascillations.

Thank you for all the kind remarks. I really try to do the best I can when I am making something for someone's home. I seen a lot of people that will just slap a few coats of paint on, but I want it to be something special. I guess I will have to start getting money up front for the supplies, I have thought about the Canton thing, but have no one to help me with it. I figure they both will pay Monday, but we will see. One is a manager where I work, so I don't feel like I can say much to her.

Does the deadbeat have a cell phone. If so, she should be able to afford to pay you for your work. As for the sick one, is she sick or is she claiming blue flu so that she doesn't have to pay you.

I can't see why you can't charge up front for your crafts. If you can't finish the order, it would be a lot easier for you to give back the money than it seems to be for you to get paid. Also, you must have to invest in inventory for these projects. Where are you getting that money.

Ask them if the electric company lets them not pay.

well on the other hand you dont want to allienate your would be customers so this time I would not say anything. Next time I would say well the bucket (or whatever) is on my desk for you to admire and if you still want it on Monday then come and get it then or I will resell it to someone else because I need the money.

Get the money first, take paid orders, write a work order, sign a contract.
Ya wanna make nice? or ya wanna get paid? Choice is yours.

First of all....Beautiful Work! I am crafty also and love to see others work. But as Baxtor has said above: I believe a new policy is: Pay When You Order Now.

Hey....you did your part in Good Faith....that is Sad that at least the one used you there. You deserve better!
