Amanda Barusch, Noon to 2PM Pacific Time

Hello Everybody,

I'd love to talk with people about romantic experiences in later life. I wrote a nonfiction book, "Love Stories of Later Life," that offers love stories and insights gleaned from five years of research in which hundreds of Americans participated. Here's what reviewers have said:

"Amanda Barusch takes the reader on a tour of late life's romantic possibilities - from infatuation to loss, with stops along the way at ecstasy, betrayal, and other complications.. In late life, as when we are younger, love changes everything."--Andrew Scharlach, University of California-Berkeley

" . . . for elders who desire to gain insight into romantic and sexual relationships in later life. [Barusch offers] new and profound insights...the book is delightful, hopeful and inspiring."--Stephen M. Marson for Age and Ageing

"The book is potentially transformative, as Barusch uncovers how in many respects the best is yet to come." -- Virginia Richardson

Hi Amanda,
Your book sounds great. What was the most moving love story you came across?

Amanda, your book should make a hit with our eons members as many of us are senior citizens. If I were single I'd be reading it now!
I think the subject of your book is something that is needed to be written about and discussed.

Here I've been away and you've written some messages. Thanks!

I won Susan Breen's book "The Fiction Class," which sounds terrific.

Susan asked about the most moving love story I came across. Different stories moved me in different ways. The one I most wished I could live came from a man from Idaho I called "Marty." He's now in his 90s, and a few years ago he popped into my office and said, "Hey, my whole life is a love story!" He told about meeting his wife "Gail" during the depression, nearly losing her to another man, winning her back and deciding not to attend Harvard for fear of losing her again. They spent their early years in a WPA tent, and slowly but surely made their way to a comfortable retirement. Their children are treasures. When Gail died Marty went into a deep depression, only recovering when he realized that his lethargy would have upset her. He decided to devote his life to serving others in her memory. Ah, what a wonderful man! I visit him from time to time - now he's in a retirement home. It's always fun to see him.

Then there are the stories that move me to anger. I interviewed a man who betrayed his devoted wife 4 times. He had no insight into his motives and no remorse for the pain he caused.

That's a couple of the stories collected. It was fascinating research - emotionally exhausting, but fascinating.
