Remember them? I used to work at a Rambler dealership in the late 60s and early 70s, in fact I was one of Wichita's first Lady service writers here in Wichita. I was hired as a parts and service cashier, but after about a year or so I earned the right when I successfully diagnosed a problem with a brand new Gremlin. Shortly after taking the cashier job, a customer kept bringing in his brand new Gremlin with a rattle in the front end, not only could he hear it, he could also feel it in the steering wheel. The service Department did everything they could think of to end the rattle, and the customer was starting to get a lot miffed about it, in fact he went to the owner and told him we had one more chance to fix this rattle, it that didn't fix it, he wanted another car at the dealership's expense, so Mr. Mac himself gave the service Dept. a visit. The Manager of the parts and Service and every mechanic in there was scratching thier heads. I asked Jim if I could take a drive in it and see if I could think of anything, Jim had exhausted every idea he had so he gave me the keys, said he had nothing to lose, and then went with me.(the first time two people had test drove it) I drove it around the block and asked jim if he had checked the shocks, to which he replied, replaced them three times, I asked about the shock mounts and he said they had, about that time we hit a big dip in the road, while the shocks worked you still could hear this rattle, and I looked at Jim, and said "it has to be the shock mounts". We got back to the dealership, the new car prep person and Jim got out their shop lights, with one under the car and one over the car, both using lights, they finally were able to see the hairline crack in the right top shock mount. When Jim leaned on the car then they could really see it. The following day Mr. Mac was back in the service area telling me I was going to be thier first ever lady Service writer.
