Susan Breen, THE FICTION CLASS, 1:00-4:00
Do you have obsessions? You should, if you want to write. Because writing is about feeling passionate. (Life is too, I think.) Can you make a list of five things you feel strongly about; five things you agitate about at night before you go to sleep.
Here are mine:
1. My children
2. My dogs
3. Writing
4. Failure
And one other thing I’d rather not discuss.
How about you?
The first three people who submit lists of obsessions will win autographed copies of my book, THE FICTION CLASS (which was the Eons Group Read in February.) TFC is the story of a woman who heals her relationship with her mother by teaching her to write. It’s also about a writing class and how the teacher, Arabella Hicks, struggles to connect with her students. (There are a number of writing exercises in the book, including this obsession one.) TFC is my first novel. It was published by Plume (a division of Penguin) in 2008. I’m also a short story writer and one of my stories was just published in Dave Eggers’ 2009 BEST AMERICAN NONREQUIRED READING.
I’m looking forward to being part of Authors' Day. I’m planning to do a bunch of writing exercises (and give away some more free books and bookmarks.) I’m also hoping to lead a discussion on how to get started writing. You can read more about me and TFC at www.susanjbreen.com. Look forward to talking to everyone on Saturday.
