Susan Breen, THE FICTION CLASS, 1:00-4:00

Do you have obsessions? You should, if you want to write. Because writing is about feeling passionate. (Life is too, I think.) Can you make a list of five things you feel strongly about; five things you agitate about at night before you go to sleep.

Here are mine:

1. My children
2. My dogs
3. Writing
4. Failure
And one other thing I’d rather not discuss.
How about you?

The first three people who submit lists of obsessions will win autographed copies of my book, THE FICTION CLASS (which was the Eons Group Read in February.) TFC is the story of a woman who heals her relationship with her mother by teaching her to write. It’s also about a writing class and how the teacher, Arabella Hicks, struggles to connect with her students. (There are a number of writing exercises in the book, including this obsession one.) TFC is my first novel. It was published by Plume (a division of Penguin) in 2008. I’m also a short story writer and one of my stories was just published in Dave Eggers’ 2009 BEST AMERICAN NONREQUIRED READING.

I’m looking forward to being part of Authors' Day. I’m planning to do a bunch of writing exercises (and give away some more free books and bookmarks.) I’m also hoping to lead a discussion on how to get started writing. You can read more about me and TFC at www.susanjbreen.com. Look forward to talking to everyone on Saturday.

Susan- There is a problem with my book and name in the menu. It doesn't get through to my booth post. Check yours out, maybe no one can get to you.

Hi Susan,
Would love to win a copy of your book! Am I one of your first three? Or is it 1:00 there?
Cheers,
Amanda Barusch

This is my lucky day! I'll send my address right away.

I'm a walking catalogue of obsessions! Let's see - right now I'm obsessed with getting as many tomatoes as I can from the plant that has taken over our deck. So my husband & I carefully cover and uncover as conditions change... My geriatric springer spaniel has an ear infection so I'm obsessed with keeping her right ear clean and dry and her antibiotics current....I'm a wee little bit obsessed with politics and the economy. Is that the kind of obsession you're looking for?

Of course, I have passions too, but I think that's different...

Cheers,
Amanda

That's perfect. Thanks.
I'm not sure about the difference between passions and obsessions. It's an interesting point to consider. Passion sounds more wholesome somehow.

Yeah, I guess you're right... an obsession has at least the possibility of being self-destructive.

Obsessons? Hmmmm.
I'm obsessed with changing my life and making it more interesting.
I'm obsessed with making life better for dogs and cats and solidifying the human-animal bond.(more of a passion)
I'm obsessed with coffee
I'm obsessed with speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves
I'm obsessed with injustices.
I'm obsessed with learning something NEW that's out of my personal sphere -- I used to do that every year but haven't in awhile...
