Count Down Days - Christmas Block Exchange

So far I have received 6 beautiful friendship blocks in the mail. I love receiving them and they brighten my day.

Now the movtivation to plan the quilt layout is growing, and so yesterday I was playing with EQ5 to come up with some nifty way to present each block in a quilt that will display the uniqueness of each.

In a private message some of you have mentioned that they too are looking forward to receiving the blocks so they can have a quilt ready for Christmas and this will happen with everyone's efforts to complete and mail their block by October 15th. I hope this date works with all of you.

Is anyone else planning what their finished quilt will look like?

Joanie, You are so ambitious. I am excited about the quilt because you are. I have not had the time to think much about what the finished quilt will look like, but have thought a little about what I wanted to do in the borders. Not sure yet, though. I will reserve too many plans until I see all the blocks and look for more inspiration one I can lay them all out together.

I too am very excited about this project. I am all ears as how to put them together. I would like to try something different but being a newbie sorta maybe I should stick with something easy. My last queen size quilt almost got the best of me. I would love to learn how to do blocks on point but it looks so hard I guess I should stay with what I know. Well I thi k I am rambling a bit.
We are leaving for vacation today, Williamsburg Va. Can't wait. I hope everyone has a great week.

Hey Marsha it just so happens that was what I was working on Saturday. If interested or anyone else is interested I will create templates and instructions. It took me a bit to get it to how I wanted it to look. It will be about a 12.25" block completed. So if you have a 16 block quilt (4 rows and 4 columns) that will give you a 49x49 quilt size. I will be adding borders, as well. What is cool about this it gives your block a sort of block on point look.

Others suggestions would be add sashing. It can be the same fabric. You can add a block between each sashing with a complementary or contrasting color. Of course you can add a number of borders.

In the sticky messages under Quilting Links there are several sites that explains how to create an on-point block quilt. For quick retrieval here is the link:

I encourage you to challenge yourself to learn how to do something different. That is how you improve your quilting skills. <--I'm one to always challenge myself. That is just me and sometimes that is tough. But there is times where it is nice to do what comes easily and still make a wonderful looking quilt.

How long is one in a newbie stage? I consider myself a newbie when I compare my quilts to some of those award winning quilts.

Hi Joanie,
I would love the template! I just looked at the sites you posted and am totally confused as to how to do the blocks on point. If you have an easier way oh my I will love you forever. Oops, I am sorry I shouldn't get so excited.
As to being a newbie, I think i will be one forever.... I have so much to learn that my little pea brain can't imagine ever knowing all that you gals know. I will however keep trying with everyone's help and guidance.
Love you all, Marsha

Diagram of On-Point Block in Rows

Note rows are on the diagonal versus on the horizontal. There is a triangle for each of the corners and then there are larger triangles which are called inset triangles along the top, bottom and sides.

view link

In the above link to quiltbug is a chart to determine the size of triangles for cutting the corner and inset triangles based on the block size. For 8” blocks find the row for triangles that will be the correct size for the 8” block.

I’ve not used one but you can purchase at your local fabric shop a diagonal-set-triangle ruler as another option to cut triangles to size desired. The above link will show you a picture of what one looks like.

In the picture I posted with add-on borders to the Christmas Friendship block is not an on point block. It just gives an appearance of being one – kind of. As soon as I make the instructions and draw and scan the templates I will post it for you to print off. I will work on it this evening.
