In some instances I think hormones play a part in disinterest. Then after things settle down it may be difficult to re-establish the relationship or start a new one. I've heard a lot of friends say they are embarrassed about their older body. To that I say pfffttt.
For me it's not any different than when I was younger. I want to establish an emotional connection first. If you have that then love is more likely to be blind to our physical limitations.
