Are Californians wimps?

I live in a condo complex with two beautiful pools, which I can use for free, year round (one was heated in the winter). The association has decided that the electric bill is too high, so no more pool heating in the winter months. Dang!

I can join a gym with a pool and drive there and fight the crowds for a monthly fee. OR I can buy a wetsuit (recommended to me was a 'tri-athlete wetsuit' which would allow for more mobility) and still swim (for free) year round.

Should I worry about what people will think if they see me swimming in the pool in a wetsuit? I think that (if they are real swimmers and not just sunbathers) THEY will want to get one also!

StillAYankee... I grew up in NJ and have lived in CA sinc e1979... The title your post does not fit the subject to me.. I have gone in the ocean and pools without a wetsuit. Should you need one, why do you care what other people think? Just saying!

Guess what I'm trying to say is: What would be wrong with swimming with a wetsuit, if the water is cold enough, whether it's the ocean or a pool? A certain person in my life was horrified of what people would THINK seeing a person swim in a POOL, when wetsuits (according to him) are ONLY for the ocean!!!

I say wetsuits are for being in cold water...! Am I a wimp because I don't want to freeze in the winter while swimming in an unheated pool...?

Your problem is the condo owners association. These are made up of elected or appointed owners who make decisions for the rest of the complex. I have dealt with a few of these and most of their meetings are not very well attended. Owners just don't bother to show up and a few start making decisions for the many. Did anyone suggest alternative heating for the pool??
Solar works in CA.
As to your swimming attire - I would not worry about what others think, do what is good for you.

How cold does it get in San Diego that a Yankee cannot put up with... Just kidding.... I live in Capitola CA

I agree with Sandl - I recommend addressing the issue with your HOA.

I was born in Long Branch but have lived everywhere else but there. You might be surprised to find if fighting the HOA doesn't work that if you wear the wetsuit soon after a few and then many will also be wearing wetsuits. We're all lemmings waiting for a leader.

StillAYankee, You are to be commended in continuing your exercise all year round -- if it takes a wetsuit so be it. Surfers use wetsuits all year round and aren't wimps. If you really want a heated pool, then take the suggestions given here and get involved in the HOA and suggest that alternative sources of heating the pool be considered. I don't know how close to the coast you are because sometimes that marine layer can really hinder the effectiveness of solar heaters. I thought that some communities have in the past regulated how pools were heated to reduce the impact on public utilities.

Hey, thanks for these great replies! Let's see... Yeah, I'm a Yankee and love the cold weather... but I cannot hack it when wearing a bathing suit!

You are right, the HOA just does things without saying much to anybody. We get a 1-page (2 sides) newsletter about every other month, and there is rarely anything in it that is specific news to our complex, just the same old "pick up after your dog" and "take down your holiday decorations." There really is a lot of news to share with homeowners; guess I should volunteer to attend the meetings and write articles! The HOA president said they are turning off the heat because of low usage. Well, I see people using the jacuzzi all year round; it's the same access as to swim, so how do they know who is using what?

You are right about wearing a wetsuit will inspire others. I have walking sticks (make walking better exercise - like cross-country skiing) but ya look a little silly walking around with these poles... at first. Now I see others using them.

Solar heat is a great idea! We've got plenty of sun (about five miles inland). HOA meeting --- here I come!!!

I would think getting in and out of a wetsuit was more exercise than the swim itself. Haven't ever done it, but I don't even like putting on rubber gloves to clean or garden gloves to work. Doubt I would invest in something that would always be hanging in the shower to dry out,, but, to each his own. Guess I'm more of a sunbather. I like warm water like the Carribean. Lived in Ca. almost all my life....signed, Wimp.
